The performance of La Fille mal gardee by the Royal Ballet last Saturday afternoon was one of the best performances I have ever witnessed. I had never seen this ballet previously, but now it ranks as one of my all-time favourites. It was one of those rare occasions where the stars were aligned and everything was just right … Such a joyous, bright and breezy ballet that kept me enchanted from scene to scene. Most famous for the clog dance and dancing chickens (!), other highlights included the supremely athletic male solo and the intricate May Pole dance … There wasn’t a single bit of down-time such is the invention and zest on display here. They didn’t have the greatest names in ballet on stage, but the performances by the two leads, right down through the corps de ballet was of the very highest quality. The comic timing displayed by all was quite something, especially the way it is carefully punctuated by the musical score, which itself was spirited and immaculate in equal measure. The stylish art direction and colourful costumes couldn’t fail to charm. The cast fully deserved the extended final applause which seemed to even take them by surprise! Great to see so many children there, including my son; it’s an ideal family ballet … I had a beaming smile on my face from start to finish, and that is the best compliment I can pay the Royal Ballet for such sparkling entertainment.
