... Android head unit next. Followed by a huge great f*ck off Sub that fills the boot, tinted windows all round and perhaps a set of LED running lights after that?

Hah! Don't forget the giant wing on the rear, the go-faster stripes, the day-glo paint job and bean can exhaust. Actually my exhaust is twin and huge but it has the power to back up the looks

Stage 2, the head unit, is almost complete. I've got it installed but have three things left to resolve:
- The bezel is just a couple of mm too narrow to accommodate the Eonon so I've ordered a couple of dremel bits to 'adjust' it - The steering wheel controls patch intelligent module is tricky to work out which patch lead I need to go to where - The USB extension to the in-dash socket is the wrong connector, trying to resolve it with the supplier but not at all critical
The Android unit works extremely well and is very responsive. I've already made my own (better) home screen with Navi going to Waze and the Radio Paradise widget displaying. I can have RP playing with Waze, muting it when there's direction/traffic info given. RP also has a very nice (but possibly distracting) slide show mode while playing music. The sound is much better than the Subaru/Clarion stock unit and I can run the equaliser flat with just a bit of bass boost.
I'll take a photo when the bezel is done and installed.

If you need the bezel modifying in a more 'sophisticated' way let me know as I can probably help.

I've just today sorted the steering wheel control wiring and setup the buttons with the 'Wheelkey Study' app which learns what you want done with each button. Just the bezel opening to sort now, which is giving me trouble. Perhaps I'll take up petea 's offer!

I've now got the proper USB retention cable for the Subaru (the first one sent to me was for a GT86 which has a different connector) so that the original in-dash USB socket can be enabled with the new head unit. Things like this are time-consuming and I've had the whole thing out several times now. It's nice to charge the phone from this socket and I just need to buy the Eonon dongle in order to enable USB tethering so I don't need to enable the wi-fi hotspot each time I drive the car.

I've completed stage 1 of my car audio revamp by replacing my door speakers and dash tweeters with the rather nice Focal IS165TOY kit (made for the BRZ/GT86). These replacement woofers and tweeters took about two hours to complete and the sound is in another dimension from the pathetic noises the previous speakers used to make. When I removed the old drivers I laughed at the magnets on them, about the size of a 2p coin. I now have musical communication and a modicum of bass at last. Android head unit next. I further spotted a pair of top-dash midrange drivers from the USA on eBay, purportedly JBL drivers made for a hi-fi option for the car never made available here. Prising off the top grills on the dashboard reveals a place for the Focal tweeters installed above, and a larger cutout for a pair of midrange drivers. The mounting points are there (once you realise that they are a L/R pair - duh) and all you need are some plastic pop rivets of the kind that we all have a spare baggy of different sizes. The grill makes them fit snugly against the top foam surrounding the drivers, too. There was some soldering required as the connectors for them don't seem to exist - at least on UK BRZs. They may have been a Toyota-only option? I removed the connectors from the tweeters, cut the wires leading to the strange block connectors under the drivers and soldered the plugs onto the wires. Ground (black) appears to be the smaller spade terminals. Added some foam under them, the same stuff I used in the door panels. The result is a much happier balance with fuller midrange and less tizz. In fact, together with the Focal door drivers, they make remarkably good music. I'm pretty happy with it now.

Thought I'd post a photo of the completed head unit after working a lot on the trapezoidal bezel to make it fit the Eonon.

I've got a Volvo S80 SE-Lux and there's no point what so ever even trying to do what you've done Martin, it's got the Harman Kardon 10 speaker system and the head unit is little more than a control panel which is all linked to the screen, it has a DVD transport but from what i'm told all of the intelligence of the system is in a control box hidden in the boot somewhere i think, on top of that it uses the Canbus wiring system and all the heating and ventilation system is linked through it. I can see why they've done it, to make it impossible to steal the stereo and to be fair to it as far as car audio is concerned it doesn't do a bad job.

Yes, quite a few cars have non-removable radio systems, which is OK if it performs well. The one that came with the Subaru featured 'apps' none of which are available in the UK, and execrable sound. So it had to go. Even now, the sound is only acceptable but I don't need better as the car is not quiet and I only listen to Radio Paradise.
