That picture was taken in a moment in time , inferences about what it proves are dodgy to say the least , indeed they could be googling the pictures history or gombrich's comments upon it . The only fact proven in that picture is that 12 youngsters are in a gallery .
however it looks like they are in the national portrait gallery , if so then i would not blame them for inattention , as it is merely full of fat old royal bastards or rich fat old men stroking their ego whilst they get rich from exploitation
As Morrissey put it , it says nothing to me about my life .

That picture was taken in a moment in time Have you looked around you recently? Young people glued to their phones at home, in the restaurant, in the street, in a bleeding cinema while the film is playing, with their own friends. Have you ever read the pure unadulterated drivel they write to each other about absolutely nothing, but in continuous circular detail until your brains want to dribble out of your ears?
It's hardly a moment in time, more an epidemic.

I have 4 under 12, I am familiar with the personal peccadilloes of the youth of today . my point was about how we interpret photographs. [not about the youth of today ] ,which was in turn a homage to Peter Berger and his seminal book and TV programme "ways of seeing" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ways_of_Seeing

I am unsure what to take from the photo:
That sort of artwork, along with Ballet, opera, theatre etc are simply nauseating to me. Then again, FB, Twitter etc are a waste of a life IMO. And then Agan, I spend (waste) far too much of my life with an IPad in my hands.
I need to do more with my life and I suspect, so do the kids in the pic. I bet none of us would be interested in looking at crusty old oils though.

...fat old royal bastards or rich fat old men... Ageist and Fattist, twice over, all in the space of 9 words. I hope you've slapped your own wrist for that D.Q.

"Fattist" is the best word I have heard in a long time. I hope it makes it into the dictionaries if it hasn't already.

It's hardly a moment in time, more an epidemic. I don't agree. It's likely always been like that, it's about what's important to the teenager. Something on BBC World Service yesterday this at time point 1.43: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02nk8c0A Guardian reader sent this entry from their diary 20th July '69: "I went to the arts centre by myself in yellow cords and blouse. Ian was there but he didn't speak to me. Got rind put in my hand bag by someone who apparently has got a crush on me, it's Nicholas I think... uurrgh! Man landed on Moon."

Touche slinger , of course in DQ's moral universe it is okay to call royalty and exploiters of the common man anything you like be they dead or alive . Poor Ed Sherren is a completely different matter .

Sorry, I meant myself and the teens in the pic. Ah, fair enough! My nine year old son very much enjoyed the Veronese and Rembrandt exhibitions at the National ... whether he enjoys going as a teenager remains to be seen of course.

the more I look at the pic, the more inclined I am to think they kids are actually researching something. It all looks too intense to be random "tweeting" or similar. Nevertheless, I really do think there is a growing problem with many of us spending too much time online and missing out on life. I include myself in this description although I hope to change my habits. I might see if there's parental lock timer on the iPad which restricts me to an hour or two a day.
