I love all types of guitar players
TonyC has been talking about some of the rock greats
Here are a few of mine I keep it rock based at the moment
Jeff Beck Just love his playing gets better as he gets older He has so much control over what comes out of the guitar, yes lots more technical but few can phrase like Jeff
Derek Trucks Great slide player here him do some of his Indian inspired music to get a sense just how good he is John Petrucci Been a fan every since I heard Dream and Day Unite A very technical player you can hear he quite inspired by people like Al Dimeola
Warren Haynes Billy Gibbons early Carlos before he got all weird Peter Green Matt Scholfield (see him live if you can) Steve Moorse (the guy can really play) My favourite players tend to be more towards Fusion or Acoustic music from different traditions such as Nuevo flamenco gypsy jazz and people like Tommy Emmanuel

Jeff Beck and David Gilmour, both for making their guitar sing (but in different ways).

Growing up, my guitar hero was Michael Schenker. Supremely melodic, he made everything look so easy...
Nowadays I guess I enjoy listening to Jimmy Page and Richie Blackmore as much as anyone. Still enjoy early Eddie Van Halen too...

That's a hell of a list Mike! The one name on it that I am surprised to see is Miller Anderson, as I thought so few people had heard of him and would still remember. He used to play in a little band called Woodbine around the Brighton area when I was a teenager and I probably saw them dozens of times in pubs and village hall type venues. A great player with the kind of subtle touch that I value greatly.

I like his solo album, 'Bright Lights' that he recorded just after leaving Keef. Playing it now!

When I was working in Austin TX back in the late 80's I was very fortunate to catch Stevie Ray live he sent the band off for a break after 3 hours lol and continued until he felt it was time to go home lol
Not the most technically gifted, however he played from the heart and what ever he was feeling came through in his playing a rate talent indeed.
Has any one mentioned Steve Howe from Yes? Or that real talent cut short Randy Rhodes?
Old trout face Robin Trower
Again Leo Kottle excellent
Sorry Eric (clapped) out does little for me
No one has put forward John lee hooker or Harrison both good in the respective ways
Januk Gers or Vivian Campbell these to make some sterling material in their careers thus far
Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody both great blues men these days
George Benson is again overlooked but talented
The sun is shining guys you should be out enjoying the day lol

No one has put forward John lee hooker or Harrison both good in the respective ways No, but now that I think about it, Buddy Guy is rather stupendous especially when he's in Hendrix mode.

I think Buddy might take issue with your comment about Hendrix mode. It's more a case of Hendrix trying to be like Buddy Guy ... www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/Buddy-Buddies-Buddy-Guy-730.aspx

Amazed no-one has actually named Hendrix in his own right - is that because he's assumed to be at the top or did I miss something? Got to be up there for me. SRV most definitely and I love this quote of his "I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist – he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar–he played music."
As much as I respect the talents of Satriani and Vai, they become quite tedious to watch live for more than around 45 minutes.
Gallagher, John Lee Hooker . . . too many to name really. But not many players made a guitar sing quite like SRV and Hendrix did.

It's the confusion caused in my mind by Guy still being alive. One of the greatest guitarists I've ever seen on stage. Thanks for the correction

Or that real talent cut short Randy Rhodes? I am a massive fan of Randy, could listen to him for hours.. I also rate Ozzy's other guitarists, Jake E Lee and Zakk Wylde but not the latest dude he's got...

Stevie Ray and Rory both played from the heart I think that's why I love them so much John, real and honest. Great to have a thread like this to jog the memory, as I've been playing SRV for the last 3 hours Mind you Guthrie Govan is really impressing me at the moment, seen him 3 times now and that guy is the real deal. I would take an evening seeing him over Satch & Vai any day.

As a guitarist my list is pretty much endless, so please take the Knopflers and Claptons etc. as read. I've tried to list a few who might have been forgotten, and who I've actively tried to emulate at one time or another.
Stan Webb (Chicken Shack) Andy Latimer (Camel) Andy Powell and Ted Turner (Wishbone Ash) Laurie wisefield (Home & Wishbone Ash) Kevin Peek (Sky) Will Ray, John Jorgenson and Jerry Donahue (The Hellecasters) Tim Renwick (Al Stewart et al) Richard Thompson Peter Green Gordon Giltrap Danny Gatton Jan Akkerman (Focus) Albert Lee
Needless to say there are lots more.
