Gosh, it must take something really mediocre to remove the vim and vigour of SR-325s! Do you know, I find the SR325 to be bright yes but not too bright, my other Grado's, PS-500 are a lot more refined and smoother but the 325s are smoother and less bright the first pair of Grado's I had, a pair of SR-125's. Paul.

I only know Topping from their reputation for T-Amps and the NX-1 probably uses a similar circuit. That's good to know, I'm quite fond of T-Amps, so it'll be good to see how good it is and at the price it's worth a punt Chris sent me his FiiO which I received today and will try out first but that Topping has moved further up the list

Yes, don't get me wrong I had a pair and loved them for what they did. Unlike a lot of people's experience with them, I didn't think they were overly bright at all, just incredibly detailed and enthusiastic.

If you liked the SR-325s Chris, you adore the PS-500's I also have, they are simply amazing, they do everything the SR series do plus sooo much more and IMHO are a bargain at £599.00, easily bettering the RS1's which retain at £699.00 and to my ears are a bit thin sounding.. I was lucky as I got mine at one of the Hifi shows last year so got a show deal of 10% plus they threw in a Grado carry case

Yes, I've had a go on all of the upper end Grado models now (I think) and they are all good. However, there is no place in my life for headphones at all nowadays other than for the odd flight and I would never risk something like that for that purpose. I sold my 325s a few years ago because my wife loves music as much as I do and our tastes and habits are pretty similar - no need for them.

Fair enough Chris, I use my Grado's for prior to sleep duties (never found it easy to just fall asleep) whilst at home and the second pair are used when I'm travelling with work

Think I'm going to punt for the Topping NX1 as it is slightly larger than FiiO which Chris kindly lent me (and is amazing for the price) and therefore I'm slightly less likely to lose it hehe!

If you can push your budget then the oppo HP-2 is an excellent amp and DAC that will do iPod duties as well as PC/Mac and Android. Another possible solution and its cheaper i can recommend would be a altoids amp from someone in the UK who makes then, Askewlabs made my cmoy and the SQ is excellent from a line out of my iPod Classic. He will custom make and change components if you wanted - www.askewlabs.co.uk/ourshop/prod_3182068-CMoy-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier-Altoids.html

So I bought the Topping and I'm very very impressed with it especially considering the price. It's has a cast iron (I think) build and is at least one jump up on the FiiO that Vhris leant me which retails for around the same ish price.

Good to know, Paul, it's a rather cute looking unit all right. How about a review and photo in a new thread in the Headphones section?

I use an HRT Microstreamer from the Lightning connector of my iPad ( What HiFi Review link) and it sounds pretty good to me (not listened to any other portable, so cannot make comparisons). Would have recommended it until I got an email last week from HRT saying Apple are looking at reducing current output (I think) from lightning connector to below the level where it will work. They originally said last update would be the one, but apparently it hasn't happened yet. I wouldn't want you to spend all that cash only to find out it stops working with your iPhone after the next iOS update.

Teach me for not reading the thread fully. Just seen you've already bought something.
