Hi all, I have an iPod Mini and Classic with Grado SR325 headphones and whilst the sound is more than acceptable I'm an keep to try out a Portable Amplifier...
I have been looking at FiiO models at the moment which are reasonably priced on Amazon but was wonder what people on here think?
i have upto £150.00 to spend.
Paul.

I might be misunderstanding what you mean by "portable"'but I can recommend the NVA AP10P or PX. I was surprised by how much of the more expensive models performance can be had for so little. The headphone performance is meant to be great although I can't confirm myself because I hate headphones with a passion so would never use that function. £150 used price should be achievable.

See here for a good looking recommendation. I see that is a DAC too but the iPod doesn't come with a digital output... Do you know if it also works without using the DAC? P.

Fair question, I'm really looking for something I can use whilst I'm travelling away with work (I'm an IT Consutant) so that would probably rule out the NVA models. Paul.

I use a wee Fiio Fujiyama - x5 maybe? - It's not the last word in refinement or anything but at £20 it was an improvement AND a good way to see whether it would actually get used or not. You are welcome to borrow it to try if you so wish.

I am unclear whether you want something that you can plug into the mains when you are staying in a hotel or if you're looking for something battery powered you can use in your pocket.

I could use something that could be plugged into a wall socket although as I have found the majority of sockets are usually miles from the beds which is not ideal. Also, I was thinking along the lines of something that won't get damaged by being in a Suitcase regularity. Paul

I tried a few of the fiio amps wasnt that impressed sonically. I still have a 5 the same as chris mentioned-it is a good wee device but no great shakes...it will let you run full size cans with a bit of oomph.
I have an epiphany HPA that aint half bad in conjunction with a classic/650s. It has an in built battery so can do bedside table duties.
For your budget a capella with camcorder battery pack is nearly doable!!!!

I am trying to avoid having a full on Headphone amp due to weight, bulk etc and thus go for a FiiO or something similar, Chris is sending me his 5 to check out (thanks Chris) so I will give that a whirl and let you know how I get on. Paul.

Ooo that looks rather interesting and especially at the price, does anyone have any thoughts on this model (Martin?) I'm not looking for the finest of sound quality, just something that improve the somewhat flatness I experience having the Grado SR-325's connected directly to my iPod Classic and or iPod Nano. Paul.

Gosh, it must take something really mediocre to remove the vim and vigour of SR-325s!

I only know Topping from their reputation for T-Amps and the NX-1 probably uses a similar circuit.

It looks like a nice low risk (cheap) option to have a go at.
