Hi all, joined a few weeks ago and finding the forums very useful for planning my next upgrade! Thanks to MartinT I now have the squeezebox touch I have been after for a while, so looking at changing my Kandy L3 to an Amptastic mini-1. Can anyone comment on wether one of these t-amps would be an upgrade over my Kandy? Other plans are to switch my VDH D102 mk3 for an RFC pluto or Atratus 3, Current system is: SBT with EDO and TT3.0 Caiman MK2 running from Anker pro2 battery Roksan Kandy L3 Tannoy DC6T VD 4mm OFC speaker cable Cheers, James

I'm not a lover of T-amps, or at least those that I have tried.
But, I have been spoiled rather by valves.

Tempted by trying a valve amp, I'm ashamed to say I've never even listened to one though! Other option I was thinking of was a hybrid type amp - unison research unico would be idal!

Whereabouts are you James? It may be that someone who lives fairly nearby has some things you could listen to.

I'm in Milton Keynes Chris, relatively new interest in upgrading my equipment so I missed the Whittlebury show last year. Would have been ideal for me checking out new stuff!

What a beautifully neat and simply elegant system. I get sick of ugly looking systems with wires and boxes everywhere. It doesn't help that my favourite speakers are butt-ugly and need free-space siting either. I imagine your system would let me enjoy the harmonious surroundings whilst taking in the music in a more relaxed mood.
I haven't liked the t-amps I have tried but YMMV. Maybe you could borrow one or at least try on approval to see if its your thing.
A very neat and small valve amp that I absolutely loved was the Audion Sterling. Wish I'd never sold mine, although it did kick out a fair amount of heat and I always preferred to give it plenty clearance above. If small and neat is your thing, I also rate the NVA AP10P. Surprisingly capable of driving speakers it really shouldn't and is also remarkably close to bigger NVA setups IMO. Available on approval too.
I don't know the a Roksan amp although I am a lover of their decks and arms. What are you hoping to get from a change? Is it a smaller amp with equivalent SQ, or is it all about the sound?

Hey James, it's good to see the Touch in use again. It works well with the Caiman-II for sure!

Thanks for your comments and suggestions Only constraints I have are that the amp would have to fit into the space the Kandy occupies! It's all about the sound though so I could get a mini-one and decent power supply to replace the Kandy. Just not sure it would have the oomph for my music tastes. Today it's been, Genesis, Elvis live, Nine inch nails, Flaming Lips!

Hey James, it's good to see the Touch in use again. It works well with the Caiman-II for sure! Thanks Martin, I've been playing around with cables today and settled for the coax cable that came with my caiman. I've also had to set flac decoding to be done on the SBT, as my high res files wouldn't play if decoding was done on the server.

Nice system, James.
The Roksan Kandy Integrated is an amp I want to revisit someday.
The transformer is pretty big...550va. Nice hefty build quality too!

Hi James, of course it's all down to personal preference, but I just love the sonic presentation of my hybrid - it's a Consonance R150 linear which uses a 6H30p tube in the pre-amp section. The power-amp has enough bass grip to keep my Tannoys in check and it excels with all the range of music I throw at it. I would be very surprised indeed if the Amptastic outperformed your Kandy, but stranger things have happened I guess in the world of hi-fi! I'd certainly try and borrow one to do a side-by-side comparison before getting shot of your Kandy ...

Looking at your speakers I would say that just one T amp would be a bit to light weight Getting two would work well, with a decent power supply but then the budget goes up a lot more

Thanks to a very kind offer from Chris, I'm going to try out his T-amp for a week or so.
I'll let you all know how it compares to the 15kg Kandy monster!
julesd68 your amp is absolutely beautiful, looks like something you'd get as an extra with a Riva speedboat!

Yes, I have an Amptastic Mini-T sitting around doing nothing, so I offered a loan. I'm afraid I shan't be sticking the Radford amp that is also unconnected in the jiffy bag with it though. So if you want to try valves, you'll have to make other arrangements!!! I'll PM you shortly so we can swap details.
