As you take your life into your hands when entrusting your valuable property to a courier, I thought it would be good to have a place where recommendations could be made.

First off - I'm looking for a safe way to send several hundred quids worth of gear to the United States. It's only going to weigh a couple of kilos or so, but Royal Mail are asking for £77. I'd be grateful for your suggestions.

I have used Parcel2Go for a number of years as a service. Their prices are good and I usually select DHL (now Yodel) or UPS from their carriers. Never use City Link or the truly terrible Hermes.

Guys If you sending overseas then Inter-Parcel are good, clear and concise easy quotes. Insurance option is easy too, usually UPS or Fed-ex pick up as they behalf. If you have high value goods to ship suggest UPS the best in my book, however not the best priced.

I'm with tonyc on this - Interparcel have been very good so far for me ... I choose the cheapest UPS option mostly.
I have recently started using Collectplus - their website is excellent as is the tracking. Insurance included up to £50 and I have found that they are the cheapest for lower value and light items. The other benefit is not having to wait in for a courier all day - I just drop off at a local store and they collect. So far, so good!
I'm told another to avoid at all costs is Parcelmonkey ...

30 years of using couriers here goes.....
These are all intermediary portals where you choose the selected courier.....
P4D ok but pricey, never had a problem with them
Parcels2go try making a claim! NEVER pay out ever, avoid.
Parcelmonkey I always use them for items over 2kg to europe and ROW, they use parcel force and PF have improved massively in the last few years
Interparcel I did use 90% of the time then they messes me about with a few deliveries so bye bye, their standard UK service is OK using UPS
New kid on the block is parcelbright, so far sent over 100 packages out NO PROBLEMS YET, £6.64+ VAT next day using DHL, these are getting the bulk of my business at the moment.
Up to 2kg use royal mail as they still cannot be beaten, about £15 to send a box weighing up to 2kg international signed for, £30 ROW
No faffing about with customs for royal mail as you just put a sticker on the box with the package details on.
There are plenty of others and we have all had bad experiences with some but overall the above are ok I find.
Worst individual courier for me......
No.1 by a long margin City Link, avoid IMO.
Hermes I have heard bad reports but I use them to send Knosti RCM's out and they have not lost any yet and I sell 100's!

OK thanks to everyone - lots of ideas. I'd agree that Hermes are bad - I spent some time on the phone with them failing to sort out a problem just the other week.

I would agree with Dave city link are hand cranker's of the first order along with UK Mail who's customer services is amongst the poorest of any company I have dealt with in my entire business life.
Currently Interlink for ourselves are excellent, first class service, easy to get hold of and then even TXT / email the recipient the delivery time within one hour.
Price wise also excellent, though we do send around 30+parcels a week.

City Link have the rudest staff imaginable, totally unhelpful, and the number of times they've made a mess of a simple delivery means that I canned using them years ago.

Oh sure. There's always Parcelfarce to set a really low baseline.

I have always said the couriers we used were 'the least worst'
FedEx used to be good but over the years turned into the Civil Service and lost their customer care skills. When we left them we were spending around £100k a year on overseas - and they let us go ! Replaced them with DDI who were very good but bought out - bad news I thought. No, Crossflight have worked beyond and above the call of duty many times. We now also use them for UK overnight and direct van deliveries, which they openly admit to sometimes subbing out. Still great service - and who can say that about a delivery service !

City Link have gone into liquidation. A more incompetent, rude and inept company it would be hard to imagine. In nearly all my dealings with them, they cocked up some aspect of the delivery. Good riddance!
