I was visiting my mum recently and was listening to her system - she has a Naim cd and amp with Chario speakers. There seems to be a strange fault on the left channel. Basically there is some low level distortion in the midband that comes and goes depending on the music. It's definitely the speaker as the fault stays there when swapping speaker cables round. Not quite sure what to do as I don't think Chario have a distributor in the UK anymore... Does anyone have an idea what the fault could potentially be? At the moment I don't have a clue whether there is a loose connection or the driver needs replacing...
I would like to sort this out for her, so any advice would be welcome... She's in South Manchester and am not sure there are any decent local dealers.

It's hard to say without hearing but it could be the voice coil rubbing. I have had that happen a few times over the years. I'm not technical but I sent my drivers to Wembley Loudspeakers. The last driver was from a Naim Credo and they charged £25 plus post. They often have a heavy schedule so it may take a few weeks. Maybe someone else can recommend a driver repair company.

It does sound like a rubbing VC. One free thing to try before taking them anywhere for repair is to rotate the offending woofer 180 degrees to see if that helps ? It that doesn't make any difference you could try swapping the bass drivers over between the speakers to eliminate the crossover.

Also, I remember a couple of years back Gromit [member on another forum] thought his speakers were faulty as they were making a slight buzzing distortion noise at certain frequencies... Turned out the banana plug sleeves were loose and rattling along to the music.

Thanks chaps, that's most helpful indeed - I'll have a look at them next time I'm up before sending them anywhere ...
