I read at www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-31834927 that the BBC is going to give away computers to school kids. This reminds me of the days of the BBC micro, and the Archimedes. The BBC really led the home PC development in those days. I still think it was a big mistake for them to drop that part of their business model.

Agreed, Stan. I used to work for the service company that serviced BBC Micros in schools, as well as Research Machines.
The Raspberry Pi is a very capable computer and we run classes teaching Python and such to students. I think it's a great idea to bring back lost skills to the new generation. Stop them playing games and make them create them instead. Fantastic for problem solving.
