As much as I love the Barbican and the Festival Hall etc, over the next couple of years I would really like to try and see more concerts outside of London.
I get to visit Manchester quite often as my mother lives there and have really enjoyed the Bridgewater Hall which has excellent acoustics.
I would love to hear about your favourite venues (outside of London) *anywhere* in the UK - I'm looking for that ideal combination of great orchestras, acoustics, atmosphere and architecture ...

Of the three major London venues, only the Festival Hall really comes up to scratch with the exception of its organ, which is feeble. The Barbican has neither good acoustics nor a good organ. The Royal Albert Hall is a disaster acoustically, but has the best organ by far. So it's a mess, but the Festival Hall is my current preferred venue. More power to Simon Rattle if he can get a new London concert hall built.
Regionally, The Anvil in Basingstoke is really rather nice and we've seen a good few classical concerts there. My biggest wish is to visit the Birmingham concert hall, which has a great reputation, but I haven't managed to as yet.
The most exotic hall I've visited for a concert is the Sydney Opera House, which is fabulous.

Yes, I'd like to go to see a good concert in Birmingham too ...
I'd also like to check out the Bournemouth Symphony sometime at the Lighthouse in Poole - they have had quite a line-up of principal conductors over the years ...
And then there's Scotland's concert halls but I'm a bit less likely to make it up there in the near future!

I used to go to quite a few things at the Turner Sims in Southampton, when I lived down there. Not really a big enough hall for a symphony orchestra, but with something that suited the acoustic, it was wonderful. I recall hearing the Hilliard Ensemble there which was just right.

I've never noticed anything listed there, I'll have a closer look. Thanks.

Wow! Good spot Martin.
I have to say it looks completely wonderful, I just love the design inside and out. The 'layers' within the concert hall look inspired. Just what London needs to capitalise on this new interest in classical music. I think you would get many more international punters going to concerts there as well.
I can't wait, if this is approved. Question is, when are they aiming to build it by?

I've no idea but apparently the land will be available soon. Will the funding be there, though?

I love the Museum of London - shame it's going from that site but hope they do a good job when it moves.
