For me it was almost inevitably...
...although it was preceded by two Readers Digest Beethoven boxed sets that my Dad gave me, but I paid for the above.

Copland, Fanfare / Rodeo: Dallas Symphony Orch. This one
I bought it after hearing 'fanfare' during a music lesson at school, where we were asked to express a preference between an orchestral one, the ELP version and a jazz rendition. I was the only person in the class who liked the orchestral version!

That was tough finding the actual recording artwork, but it was this one;

I was the only person in the class who liked the orchestral version! I love the orchestral version (especially the immense Telarc recording), but I also love the ELP.

The Woody Herman version was funky in a 'Theme from Shaft' kind of way!

Unsurprisingly I was led to this via the Emerson, Lake, and Palmer version. It's not the best recording, as I've since discovered (the Tchaikovsky is quite good though) but it was a good starting point.

That's a classic, Jules. It was definitely one of my earliest purchases.

Don't think I've ever heard that performance, Tim.

That was tough finding the actual recording artwork, but it was this one; That was my first classical purchase. Think it cost me 12/6 (62.5p)

My first too, in mono, but the storm still rouses.

Holst's The Planets, Smetana Ma Vlast (first two movements), then a boxed set of Beethoven symphonies (Karajan/Berlin phil). All of which bizarrely I still have 40-odd years later.
Knowing the Beethoven symphonies was at least partly responsible for getting my wife on the hook. We went to see a Sean Connery film called Zardoz in 1974. I chirped up "ah - that's the slow movement of Beethoven 7". She thought I was talking 18-year-old bollocks until I played her the track.

Not albums that I bought, but what got me started on listening to classical music were two Readers Digest boxed sets of Beethoven symphonies and concertos on the Concert Hall label that my dad bought. They were simulated stereo!! However, I owe them my start in classical listening at the age of 12 or so.
