The regulator contacts in the socket. I was going to suggest taking them out and putting them back in - you could do this just to renew contacts on both. You can prise them up a little with a screwdriver and push back in again. But if it's ok now…
Anyway - it's working!!

Did the regulator board have a contact to earth through the chassis or a mounting post?
EDIT: snap!

Seems plausible. The funny thing is I had to give the regulator a good going overt to get the sticker off and was scared of damaging it! Looks like I have managed to get the contacts working again

Team work! With major credit going to James, I think.
Can't beat that glow of self-satisfaction, can you! Not to mention the savings in repair costs.

Too right! Ive really enjoyed the process and really appreciate the friendly and genuinely helpful Posts from everyone. I now have a spare set of regulators on their way, which I will keep in case the problem returns. I have an amp I love that is re-capped and sorted with new rectifiers too.
If anyone out there reading this is similarly clueless with Electronics, I hope they are encouraged to join, learn and contribute.

I have picked up loads of knowledge (compared to what i knew before:zilch!) thanks to your contributions and those of others. I have also started dabbling and enjoyed it a lot

Ii am relying on memory to an extent but it's the best Exposure amp I have owned. I have a 6/7/Dual 4 which should be better, but it isn't even close. Would it be better than a 3/9/Dual 4? I've had a couple of those combos and I think it is. The Frame transformer in this earlier model is the main physical difference but the amp seems to be more organic and also more agile.

Many of us bodgers *ahem* DIY'ers sorry have discovered the average toroid is not the best choice for amplifier power supplies. EI or R core is where its at unless the toroid is pretty special... I cannot explain it but thats what my ears tell me, many others have found the same.

It seems that the Japs agree. Many of their statement amps use huge E or R core transformers.

That's really interesting and it's something I didn't realise. I have enjoyed a lot of amps with the Holden and Fisher transformers, Exposure amongst them. The fact this old timer sees them off is an eye opener, I have also had Bedini and McIntosh amps that also used frame transformers. Both were also excellent.

It seems that the Japs agree. Many of their statement amps use huge E or R core transformers. I was going to say that, but I've been too busy doing the washing. Decades ago Hi-Fi Answers did an item on the subject and it was mentioned the Japanese had a preference for frame types. As to why, I can't recall if a reason was arrived at. Tora Tora Tora torroids have a lower radiation field and are more efficient at power transfer and so couple crap more effectively, probably, but I imagine there's more to it than that. Me old Amstrad has one. So maybe Alan S knew more than he was letting on. There could also be changes in the circuit design that account for some of what you're hearing. Old McDonald used them too: EI. EI. O…

Its certainly an interesting subject... To me at least ! Pretty much the only Japanese company to use lots of toroids is Sony who've used them in nearly every proper amplifier since the late 80's / early 90's. Is it a coincidence they are [or at least were] arguably the most popular Jap amp manufacturer in the west ? One thing I am certain of though, Alan.S knew bugger all Whippy
