If you've heard a piece of classical music that you like, and would like to find a great recording of it, this is the place to ask for advice from fellow members ...
And if you are a vinyl-holic like myself, I can help you source some of the best classical vinyl recordings from the 60's and 70's. I have two editions of the Penguin Stereo Record Guide from this era and can honestly say I have not put a foot wrong by using its recommendations and have built up my collection on this basis. It grades vinyl according to both performance, and sound quality, which is incredibly helpful. If anyone would like a specific recommendation, I will be more than happy to assist ...
I hope other members will be able to help with cd recommendations when needed.

The Penguin Guides to Recorded Classical Music (and the later CD guides) as well as 1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die, are mandatory reading if you want to build a good classical collection.

My knowledge of classical music is zero.
As such, I have, for some time, been wondering if there is a regarded classic recording of Pagliacci?
Looking on Youtube for versions of Vesti la Guibba, it is the version by Mario Lanza that seems to be the version that is imprinted on my memory.
At least I think it is. But can't be 100% sure.

Here are a couple of well regarded versions to check out - RCA 5635/6 Caballe & Domingo, John Alldis Choir, LSO with Nello Santi DGG 2709 020 La Scala Milan, Von Karajan

Thanks for the replies.
What I've heard on tv/radio, which made an impression on me, is from quite some time ago.
I'll investigate.

I think those two are from the early 70's ...

Not sure this really counts as a classical piece per se, but I would highly recommend this album… whilst I am not heavily religious I still find this album superb.

I've just ordered from Amazon a copy of 'Dictionnaire des disques et des compacts', 4th edition 1991. This will be very useful indeed. It is well recommended and covers the 1980's whereas my Penguin Guides finish at 1977. The 80's aren't renowned as the golden age of vinyl but there were still plenty of good recordings made that can be picked up cheaply. I think my French will be up to this, but even if not, it seems to employ a very similar star rating system as used by the Penguin, including their highest 'rosette' recommendations. It will also be very interesting to compare their opinions when rating the same discs! Here is the link if you would like a copy - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/2221066820/ref=pe_385721_125317731_TE_item

This is worth having too, Jules. I have an earlier edition.
