So after many moons of looking for the right place, Viv and I have signed on the dotted line for a bungalow in sarf Londun.... Well actually it's in Ham in Richmond (very posh royal borough, for those who don't know). There are two rooms to consider for sound, the main living room which has a pent roof and is 17'7" x12'9". The place has solid floors which is cool, so I'm going to have solid oak floors laid and have rugs to handle first reflections, the back wall will have the albums in open cubes, there arevove 3000 so that should handle reflections from there. Trying to decide what to put on side walls.
The second room is a "pantry" 1.8 metres by 2.8 metres. No windows, this is going to be my recording studio for the radio show and my computer office. Probably it will need anechoic foam and some bass trapping. had a look at the consumer unit andvI'll get clean feeds to both rooms and an earth spike put in the garden.
Now the fun bit, my Art Audio Quintet is in triode mode so is 15 watts per side, the room is bigger so I might need a bit more welly. I'm looking at the new Art Audio Opus 4s but anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks for that, do you know which is best, glue or bitumen for solid wood floors?

That's a big question. We would need to know what the timber is you plan to put down, size of pieces, what the sib floor is made from, the age of the timber to go down and the age of the subfloor and the average humidity of the room .

I would have a chat with Nick of Longdog Audio, he'll build whatever you want, so you can have the amp built to your spec. Lot more bang for your buck as there are no dealer margins. I can give him a shout for you if you like?

Ham a lovely area. When ever I travel to Kingston from Cricklewood I will go via Ham Hi John, when we have moved in, stop in for a cuppa on your way through. As far as Nick's amp go, I reviewed his Longdog phono stage and loved it. I also drive my Stax Energiser with one of his linear PSUs, so I know his quality of work. I'll have to hear the Quintet in the room first, but my felling is an update is going to be necessary. Thank god I have a wife who likes music as much as I do and is happy to have a great sound system in the front room. In gact when I said I might sell the Tannoys 'cos they were too big for our current flat, she got quite cross.

Only real change to the system is that I had a home theatre system running parallel to the main stereo, there were two common components, the SACD player fed it's two channel out to the main system and so did the Blu-Ray for stereo Real Audio discs. Viv and I decieded that the benefits of surrond sound movies were not that great and I got the Cambridge Audio TV2 sound base. I like the sound from it's BMRs quite a lot. May upgrade to the TV5 and put the TV2 with the bedroom telly. SACD now is dedicated to stereo duty and the Blu-Ray still feeds to both. The move has sllowed for an increase in software storage woth more of the core vinyl and CD collection at home rather than in the storage unit so I'm rediscovering some old friends, while unpacking boxes.

Well now, that last bit must make the whole move worthwhile on it's own!

Interesting - I thought I was maybe the only person who dumped their surround sound because it 'wasn't worth it'

Mike, see the other post about mains. I now have a clean radial from the consumer unit running via a balanced mains unit to the system. Just waiting for an unswitched silver plated sockets from David at MCRU and a pair of his RF filtered silver pated mains blocks to finish things off.

Well now, that last bit must make the whole move worthwhile on it's own! Indeed now have space for over 3000 albums at home as well as 2500 silver discs. I'm planning to separate the genres so Rock/pop/indie will go together with separate sections for Blues/Blues rock, Jazz and Folk/world. In the classical I want to have sections for Opera, symphonic and chamber/solo. Then I can update the database and get an agreed valuation from my insurance company.

It could be, or Pentode mode which would be cleaner and double the power, however Triode mode EL34s are in my opinion the best audio output valves on the planet. Having had a good listen to the system it the new room, it goes plenty lound enough. I still may upgrade to the new Opus 4 monoblocks, with 4 EL34s per amp, in ther future. I will talk to Tom Willis about them soon.

I have a friend with an Art Audio Quintet and it's certainly an impressive sounding amp with great depth and insight.
