The 7 is apparently one of the best if not the best pre amp that John Farlowe ever made. For me it will always be the III of which I've had three. I've had a few VIIs too, probably around 7 but that's just coincidence! My experience of the phono stages were that they equalled or bettered any internal stage I'd come across. Certainly better than any Lin or Naim phono stage which I also rate. The Ebay listing has no power amp, so £420 isn't really that good a deal. The Expander is a fairly useless item unless you have multiple sources. I guess you could always sell it on as I have done in the past.

On the contrary i find the Expander useful. Being able to tailor the input & output level is handy.

Do you need some chunky speaker cable? This ought to meet the cross sectional area requirements!

I once had some Sterling Black Mamba speaker cable - was so heavy it nearly pulled the speakers off the stands!
Didn't sound any better for its size though ...

If you look at the label on the drum of this stuff, it says 1.2mm2

I thought that Black Mamba stuff was quite well thought of, Jules?

Ah, yes... Black Mamba... (Dendroaspsis. Polylepsis)
Once thought of getting it. But couldn't rid myself of the thought that it wouldn't be wise to turn my back on it.

While were on Snakes. The Polk 'Cobra' was a good Speaker cable.. Cleopatra used to use it in her Giza system.

Other than that makes not a single bit of difference to me. i dont get sucked in with all that cods wallop.

i just stick to one brand ,saves wasting my time changing cables to see which is best- it works for me. I tend to listen to the music not the components

i just stick to one brand ,saves wasting my time changing cables to see which is best- it works for me. I tend to listen to the music not the components I buy what makes sense, i dont do brand comparisons. Ag is a better conductor to Cu that makes sense. I also cannot abide tacky construction, another important factor. I cable with both those attributes will be fine. Hi-Fi peeps need to knock it on the head imho. Other than that its the music. Im building a fresh system from scratch. On pair of Interconnects & a tone arm cable is all i require.
