I feel fairly certain that amongst vinylists here there are a plentiful number of pre-owned/cherished LPs in their record collection? I have often wondered about the history of some off my charity shop, dealer, and car boot purchases over many years and recently when pulling a record out for play I noticed on the back of the LP jacket, written in ink, the words 'Happy Birthday Dad, love John, July 1962'. After all these years I wondered if Dad was still alive and what son John was doing now? Probably his children were buying him downloads but how do you write on the back of a downlaod? Pre-loved/owned records do provided a brief insight into some unknown person's musical preference which by a chance purchase years later I share. Do you ever wonder about the history of that second hand buy in your collection? I use to write my initials and date of purchase on my new mint LPs and in years to come I wonder if somebody will muse, who the hell was '.... 2015'?

I've often wondered the same thing. A few years ago, I bought a portable reel to reel player. I was actually really only after the tapes that came with it but it had been owned and used by the lady who was selling it and her sister when they were teenagers. The tapes were pre-recorded mono Beatles albums and the cardboard liners in the boxes had various declarations of love to the members of the band in different degrees and in different handwriting. So on this occasion, I actually met one of the people in question and it was easy to imagine her and her sister jostling to get closer to the speakers in order to hear the latest album by their favourite band.

I have to be honest, but no that thought has never crossed my mind and I buy a large amount of pre-owned music - not something I would ever ponder on as for me it's not 'the thing' I'm buying, it's the artists music. I'm not really that sentimental about material things. I do however wonder about the history of a Garrard 401 I picked up in a charity shop, I suspect that was a bereavement house clearance. It had a Jim Reeves single on the deck too . . .

When buying some 2nd hand vinyl from Steve, Archive Records when he was in Chertsey there were quite a few that came from Phil Manzanera who lived in the posh bit of Chertsey at the time

I still have my copy of Screaming Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends..... I've played the odd track on my show  some of the odd notes you find tucked into 2nd hand discs can be intriguing though.

Interesting responses, thanks folks. I've used notations on some of my early LP covers as a sort of a diary of why and when I bought a particular piece of music. Without going into details; about three decades ago I went through a painful and scarring divorce, I was helped through this by a couple of women who became very close to me and good friends (women can be like this). One of them was a Swiss girl working in the UK who apart from being into music also helped me relax and rebuild my emotionally scarred life of the time, we became very close but she had to return to Switzerland and I remembered her by scribbling a thank you on a record sleeve on a record we both use to listen to alot. I still have that record buried somewhere but wonder what someone would make of it especially by my wife of today who is the exact opposite of my former one, I guess she put the finishing touch to a renewed me . Enough mush! What I'm trying to arrive at is what is behind the reason why some people write on record sleeves, Oh, and by the way the music is of prime importance otherwise I would never have bought the LP in the first place.

I certainly don't think that an interest in the artefact and an interest in the music contained therein are mutually exclusive; I'm certainly interested in both when it comes to second-hand records. I enjoy discovering scrawled dates, names, and messages, and often find myself wondering about the people - it adds another layer to the experience.

I avoid records that some prat has written on so no need to wonder what they are up to or if they may have shuffled of this mortal coil. In fact I know quite a number of my used purchases were from deceased enthusiasts and a hi-fi shop owner.

I don't have many used records with messages scrawled on them. Mind you, if it was a rarity I really wanted I wouldn't care what was written on it as long as the record was ok.
And yes, I have sometimes wondered at who owned the record previously and why they didn't like it much (since most of the ones I buy are virtually mint).

In fact I know quite a number of my used purchases were from deceased enthusiasts and a hi-fi shop owner. Some of us might think that a dedication is a nice idea. I don't have records but I do have several books that I have been given and it is good to remember who gave them to me and read their wishes. I'm not sure I would be happy calling them a prat for having done so.

I have literally hundreds of albums in my collection that 'some prat has written on' - the artist when they signed it for me
