I was wondering how many people use pro gear in their systems in purist HIFI terms it is often given a bad name but can be a way of getting decent sounds for not crazy money I use a Berhinger DSP Poweramp for my bass. It suits this purpose pretty well, having DSP in the bass is something that has really worked in my set up, allowing me to have quite step slopes and to be able to tailor mt set up depending on each amp What do you use?

I've stepped off the rip off home hifi ladder and have gone MC2 Audio MC750 Pro Amp into Urei 809 Studio Monitors, pig ugly and battered but sounds good in my room and to my ears, just simply wired with IC and SPKR cables i've had since the 80-90's, source switcher and no pre amp as the power has volumn/level controls, nice simple rig and it just works and no drama, been happy for a good few years and don't see me changing.

If I was starting again I would definitely investigate Crown amplifiers.

I have a Crown 602, 600WPC into 4 ohms. Class AB.
Main issue is a fearsome hum from the main power toroid, and fan noise. Used it for the subs, but it ended up being by far the noisiest thing in the room.

My son's Carvin pro amp, which cost tuppence ha'penny (ok, about £300), was surprisingly proficient and could certainly drive speakers pretty hard. I'm not saying it was as good as a £5k amp, but it came pretty close for a shoestring budget.

A Crown XLS1500 power amp has graced my system of late - it's a damn sight better than most "audiophile" amps which cost many times its price, imho. You should try something like that, Jammy - I think you'd be more than a bit surprised. OK - so I've now gone back to my £1500 rrp audiophile NAD S300, but the Crown is an excellent amp, nonetheless. I've also in the past used a Behringer A500 amp - that's darn good, too, although not as good as the Crown if my memory serves me well. And a Behringer DEQ2496 equalizer thingy - damn fine and incredibly flexible!

Can't spot any Mana - they did purchase some Kimber pbj cables some years ago (may have moved on from these).

It really depends on what your definition of pro gear is. I see lots of equipment touted as pro gear aimed at the lower end of the market that I would not touch with a barge pole. Secondhand gear that was the best in its day and can still cut the mustard is a different matter. A lot of my gear falls into this category and not only is it usually very good sounding equipment, it also seems to buck the usual hifi trend and appreciates in value.

Not the most revealing IMHO but the sort you could lend to your teenager for a party.

Thanks for that. It occurs to me that my Radford STA15 could be considered to be pro gear in a way, as most apparently went to studios rather than private homes because of the high cost.

My Chord goes into more studios and halls than homes, but the distinction is immaterial to me. I'd be happy to mix and match now, picking the best component from all markets. It's hard to know about Pro gear, though, as few people know about or review them in a hi-fi context.

You need to get out more Seconded, , you really need to get your ears on a good Pro amp and see it's capability, my MC2 and Urei's cost me £400.00 a piece and gives me tremendous 'play all day' pleasure fronted by my trusty Garrard 401 + SME4 + Lyra Argo, saying that have been quietly looking at one of these for the past 18 months, only one same up second hand and it went for £900.00, not desperate to replace anything but seemingly these Crown's are epic. www.crownaudio.com/i-tech-hd-series.html
