The standby vessel snapped this for us during recent flaring off operations. Basically we are burning off dangerous gases(H2S mainly) as we complete a well. Dangerous part of the operation.

It's a different world, Chris. One I know nothing about - probably not sorry about that, to be honest. More power to your elbow.

Interesting. Are those 2 vertical water jets out along the boom actually circular safety spray curtains? How often does this procedure take place Chris?

Yeah ChrisB that's exactly what they are. There's a complete cooling system setup that we monitor during these ops. Just as well as that one wasn't working very well and the back of the crane can got up to about 70 deg c. We got it sorted though. As for timespans this is the first time we've done this in two and a half years so not very often.

I live near a oil refinery and a ethylene (sp)cracker plant, the flares don't look special until you get close and then it shows just how big the buggers are, of course the way they illuminate the night sky is a clue, don't fancy being stuck offshore with nowhere to run away to.

First rig I was on (Galaxy3) was next to the Buzzard platform complex. They burnt off 24/7. Immense, utterly immense. If the wind was blowing in the wrong direction we could feel the heat off the flame. After watching this for a couple of years I cannot see how this DOESNT affect the atmosphere. The crap that went up into the sky(especially at night, strangely) would just sit there if it wasn't windy and even if it was it'd take a fair breeze to shift it along. Got a feeling we will all pay for that in the future.

215,000 barrels a day!! Immense barely describes it!! It went right up to Downing St when they wanted to shut down to clean the pipeline as fuel costs would have risen. Nuts.
