Hi Chris Might help if you give a idea of budget and a sense of how far in terms of SQ they want to go

Real surround sound (5 channels is it ?) or stereo with 2 outputs, like what my Chord has
I'm guessing the budget will not be Chord territory

Ah sorry. Right. He's thinking Mission M33is front and Modaunt Short m10 rears. So not really a package but there you go.
Hopefully some of you can suggest something better for roughly the same money.

There has to be at least one old curmudgeon who would tell him not to waste his money on gimmicks and spend the money on a decent two speaker set up Every surround sound / AV system I have heard sounds crap - I know, I know....I haven't heard one that has been set up properly and I don't have a TV so don't get the full effect etc etc. Makes no difference, they still sound stupid to me. I hate being at a cinema with all the ridiculous sound effects whirling round and those crappy Bose horrors belting out false bass and screaming treble. I very much prefer sitting in front of the computer monitor with a proper hi-fi providing the sound. I did extricate myself from my slumbers on the correct side of our sleeping platform ta very much

Gordon may have a point, I've not heard a 4 speaker system
I do find that connecting the Tivo and DVD to the big system is rather good for the oomph in the bass and the detail

Richer sounds is a good bet. If your pal wants to start from scratch they do a 5.1 pioneer set up for £200 thats five wee speakers and a sub with a dedicated av amp. The wee speakers are not too bad in conjunction with a sub and a dedicated centre speaker makes a big difference with dialogue.
these set ups arent the last word in audio for playing music but make a great fist of giving you cinema sound in yer front room.
An av amp with a headphone out lets you enjoy a movie if the family has gone to bed OR gives you a break if the other half wants to watch strictly etc!!!!

Chris, I'm fairly sure all of the mainstream speaker vendors do surround packages, so your friend would be best to hear a few, even if just demo'd in stereo. For instance, if he likes the B&W sound, then go for that. It's hard to go any further without a budget idea, but I would avoid mixing brands as the sound will be skewed unnaturally (as if surround doesn't have enough problems already).

More than slightly in my opinion. They seem voiced rather like typical German and Japanese speakers to me. On my Teufels, i had to reduce the treble output by 8db to get an acceptable response. Make sure he listens to them first.
