I'm after another CD player. CD players on eBay can be dear,DVD players are cheap.
I'm thinking a Pioneer(got one that sounds good),Panasonic or Toshiba. It'll not get used much so about £20 is more than enough to spend. Think I've got a Sony lying about as well so might not even need one.
Anyway, the question remains - which DVD players do a decent job with CD replay?

I searched for ages on the net for info on a DVD player to use as a transport.
In the end I came up with good recommendation for a Cambridge Audio DVD57. It seems the 3rd version (revision C) is the one to go for, check the rear label to make sure.
I've only used mine with a (Beresford) DAC.
It cost me £12 or so on Ebay.

I've had several Pioneer DVD players - they all sound more than decent with CD, quite a lot more than decent actually! Tbh, I could live with my current Pioneer DV-636D as my main CD player with very little heartache, it is that good. My main DVD player is an Arcam DV29 - about £1600 rrp iirc. It's great on DVD Video, not so good on CD, it's a bit laidback for me, in the Arcam manner. Pioneer DVD for CD for me.

If Pioneer do a stable platter DVD player with output to a DAC you would be onto a winner

The reason that proper CD players/transports are more desirable for Cd playback is they are designed specifically for that purpose and thus normally sound superior. DVD transports appear to do a good job in playing DVD/DVDA/SACD discs but not so good with CD unless you have some high end universal player like Esoteric or Ayre. The main reason you can get DVD players cheap is people junking them for Blue Ray. I suspect with the universal players most previous owners never played SACD or DVDA on them being clueless as to the existence of hi-res audio disks. For really good CD sound a quality player with proper CD transport is a must - VRDS, Stable Platter, Sony ES etc.

I disagree. DVD players often make excellent CD transports, ime.

Yes, I've heard several great systems with DVD players in them, especially when there's a good DAC involved.
