Here's a proposal that was made in 1983 for what is essentially a system that allows subscribers to download music, barely a year after CD was introduced. I'm not going to copy the whole thing, but here's the 'crux of the biscuit': It was a proposal to a potential investor and in many ways, if it had been taken seriously the record industry might not have ended up with the mess it's in today Another short quote: But unfortunately for the record industry, the under-valued customers found a way to plug these things together for themselves. The whole thing is here. It's not too lengthy but is very interesting and like a lot of the work by its author, it's both entertaining and amusing.

The whole digital download thing is a complete mess, it is so hard even to get redbook downloads. HD downloads whilst have grown is still very limited and unfortunately MP3 is the main source. It such a shame and could be so better with broadband speeds and how easy it is to have large hard drives their is no need for this state of affairs.

The record companies were and still are over-protective of their back-catalogue. If they had got it right, we could buy high quality material at a reasonable price in an easy to download manner.
Instead, we have different incompatible systems and piracy everywhere. I have difficulty even getting my students to understand that just copying a music file is stealing. That's down to record company greed and going about it all wrong.

I'm still collecting vinyl and CDs Hopefully downloads will settle down and with Neil Young's interference - at a decent level

That whole digital download thing was the reason Beats sold for so much. Nowt to do with overpriced, bass heavy headphones but Apple wanted the beats download base. Stupid bloody money they paid for it as well.
