I don't usually get too excited by female sopranos, but in this instance I will gladly make an exception. Fatma Said, an Egyptian soprano who is based in London. I only came across her yesterday singing Ravel's Sheherazade in the Arte concert from Paris I was watching, and was awestruck by the quality of her vocal. I don't remember the last time I felt such an instant connection to a singing voice - the best way I can put it is that I was never aware of technique or even a "performance" as such, just a purity of tone that effortlessly conveys human emotion. I will now be following her career with great interest. Her most recent album contains the Ravel but sadly this is only with piano - I much prefer it with full orchestra, so if you would like to hear her sing I highly recommend the live concert I referred to earlier. www.arte.tv/en/videos/114846-004-A/pietari-inkinen-conducting-the-orchestre-philharmonique-de-radio-france/

I hear what you mean, Jules. Creamy lovely voice, she reminds me strongly of another soprano, but can't recall her name at the moment.

I'm delighted that you have the same feeling as me here.

Got it - Maria Ewing. Don't ask me why exactly, but Said immediately reminded me of her vocal style.

I used to have the Laserdisc video of Ewing performing Carmen in Verona. Loved it!
