Police knocked on our door today
Had I seen anything suspicious last night as there were 5, yes five local houses broken into last night.
Same crew suspected of doing them all.
I couldn't help, fast asleep
Later on I spoke to my next door neighbour who had been done.
Broke in when they were asleep helped themselves to a few things. Probably got as far as their bedroom (!)
Obviously a bad experience.
How did they get in ?
Broke the glass in a patio door and *turned the key left in the lock* !!
I always remove keys from locks. Often enough lock doors madam has left unlocked
Also went around and checked our windows were locked as a few had been open to lose heat and most of those were left unlocked.
Our dogs bark in the night so we may have put them off with that.
Another house in our road was also done, only their car as lights came on from PIRs picking them up
They had CCTV pick up the culprits. No idea if that pics are useful to the police
From memory this particular house has been burgled 4 or 5 times now with these residents. I think the previous resident had at least one break in.
Why have they been done over so often ?
What ideas to keep safe ?

In short, I feel that the key is making your house less attractive and more difficult than those around you. In particular:
1. Dead lock doors with BSI/TUV approved locks. Remove keys and block letter boxes
2. where appropriate lock windows
3. Dead lock gates etc and make sure they are high enough to make it more of a challenge to vault
An ongoing interest is using hidden external PIRs to trigger internal house lights such as a landing to simulate people being woken up. Alexa or similar can do this and a simple routine could trigger a cascade of lights to simulate walking from the bed, across the landing to the hall. The routine would only trigger during hours of darkness.

If I ever thought I needed a gun for protection I'd be off somewhere else
Changed all our standard door locks for the rated Euros.
Surprised me how easy the standard locks were to break.
We have Velux windows in the kitchen, ground floor so I had a lock put on them.
All our windows have locks and I tee Madam off by locking them. Even more so now
Much like ball point pens in an office the plentiful window keys we have go missing from the places I put them.
Need to think like a burglar.
Only just worked out you can see a key in the door from outside quite easily. Thought the frame hid it.
So they saw the key next door then broke in.
Insurance co's say take the key out of the door. Thought it was super safe, now I think it's essential

Well you have plenty of dogs there right Mike?
Imo that house was hit several times because it became an easy target with no consequences.
Be a hard target. Too much hassle to deal with. 5 barking dogs. Motion sensor lights. Windows always closed. No easy access. Gravel driveway making noise. Just be too much hassle with consistently locked doors no hidden keys available.

10 dogs for the next few days, dropping back to the normal 8 after. Soon please.
The house hit several times, on one occasion they tied up their big dog.
Puzzled as to why they keep being done, but there must be a reason.
Need to get the motion sensor lights fixed. PIRs are both non working. When working they were always coming on due to cats, foxes, leaves and other so I left them off
Windows all closed on ground floor at night. One or two open for our bedroom 1st floor. Gravel drive. Keys out of sight
Looking for any other tips as next door is too close for comfort

Solar lights around the place (burglars don't like being lit up, even at low level).
Never leave any keys in view.
Keep car key fobs in Faraday pouches.
Set your alarm for ground floor zone if you sleep upstairs.

Lots of security cams that connect to internet/cloud on eBay or Amazon. Foscam are a decent brand.
Only 'keyless' fobs (where you start the car and drive with it in your pocket) are vulnerable to scanning from outside the house. Inside a pouch, they are effectively dead and do not respond to scanning.

Just locked an outside door madam had left unlocked, key in door, room left for the day
