I am playing around yet again with my streaming solution, for several reasons, change of pre-amp and now using DAC in Marantz SA-KI Pearl CDP.
So I was using RPI 2(B+) with HiFiBerry Digi+ with Volumio powered off of 5v psu built into a decent power strip, using Qobuz for miles, SQ was OK.
I replaced the DC supply with a 5V linear supply and this resulted in a slight improvement in SQ.
Next I managed to get hold of a HiFiBerry Digi+ Plus Pro card on Ebay, I fitted this today and the SQ generally has improve quite a bit, more engaging better bass, and more open soundstage, with good res sound file 44.1hz and above I can say it sounds as good as a good CD, so a pleasing improvement.
My next step is to remove the 5V DC from the RPi, and put power to the HiFiBerry P3 pins, from what I have read this will still send power to the RPi but will bypass switch circuitry on the Rpi and gives a further SQ improvement, any views on this?
When I was re-configuring Volumio for the change in HiFiBerry board I noticed that it advised if you used Software volume control this would result in a degradation in sound, I had always had this setting off so that volume had to be controlled by hardware. At the same time I have been looking at using the native Qobuz app on my MacBook Pro and/or on the iPad/iPhone, in the Qobuz app I have noticed that there is a Volume control. So this is where my question and/or confusion comes.
In Volumio settings it clearly indicates using software Volume control will cause SQ degradation, but the Qobuz app has a software volume control, so which is best to use is my basic question?
I was considering dropping Volumio and saving myself the monthly fee to use it with Qobuz embedded, what are your thoughts or advise?
