Yes, I did Paul I read that the bass had similar issues, and it was only in the last few days I became happier with the bass Unfortunately, I am now maxed out listening to speakers The MA real strength is its mids

Well I decided to do the Demo at Deco Thank you for your time I thought best to complete the journey of hearing speakers Russell K100 The bass was quite lumpy yes it went down low but at the expense of timing and texture. Okay with certain music but not for me Russell K50 Tighter bass with a bit more texture However the music is to forward for me and I could not really enjoy the speakers because of this Proac Studio SM100 A bit better but still the bass just made a mess of this track Proac Tablette 10 Signature Nice textured bass and clean open mids I was starting to think I found a cheap alternative until I put on some Dream Theater and it all became a bit of a mess. Close but no cigar.

Well a fascinating journey for sure. A few thoughts on this. Speakers are so personal I would say do not trust reviews as we like different things I heard speakers that are highly rated in reviews just not do it for me. I like fast bass that allows you to hear tapping on wood and how a person is plucking the strings ( I am not worried about ultimate bass extension). You need good coherence between bass and mids to pull this off and if the bass is bloaty it will not pull this off. I like my mids clear and open I am surprised how important mids are to me and this would be a point most speakers were just not open enough for me. Treble is also important to me, yet again I like it clean and open as possible. Every speaker I heard is voiced differently, they have different strengths and different weakness. A lot of bookshelf speakers either fail in the mids or bass for me but a few also struggled with the treble. I am a real fussy sod when it comes to the sound I want, but now at least have a stronger understanding of what I like. I think having Open baffles for many years have greatly influenced my preferences for sound I will give impression on the Gold Note A3 Evo at the weekend and a personal review once I feel the speakers have settled into the system.

I don't think having a clear idea of the sound you like is 'fussy' at all, especially when spending a lot of money on speakers or anything else for that matter.
What do you think prompted you to move from an open baffle solution?

I am quite clear what moved me on. When listening to a really good standmount speakers I was hearing how instruments like Timpani would explode with sound. I just never heard that with all the open baffle designs I heard.

That's some great double-bass playing, John. I'll fire that up later.

Yes, that sounds pretty decent on my system, deep and taut and thrummy. And the foot taps are sharp and slappy.
Mind you, I've no idea what it should sound like!

Jules I guess it all started when I got the Kef centre Speakers. They had a punch I not heard before in my system. All the bookshelfs I experimented had this. But it was not till I got the MA Silvers that I did not bother with the Neos as I was duplicating the bass notes as the speakers go reasonably low for a small speaker. I do not really listen to deep electronic music or a lot of full scale classical music and could always add a sub if I want. As you know my listening room is on the small side.

They were a few speakers I would have loved to hear. The Musican Knight 1 has a great review on YouTube I could have imported to the UK but pretty large bookshelf speakers so decided against this as did not want the speakers to close to me. They was also a pair of forward firing speakers that were from Germany but it was a case of no opportunity to demo and knowing how fussy I am I just did not want to take the risk

I visited Premier Sound today in West London and went through quite a few speakers. A big thank you for your time. .. 4) Triangle Comete EZ This are quite musical Nice mids and bass not bad. However not good with complex music due to the treble not being great. .. Hi John, you took the best course of action and auditioned the speakers first in the shop. You can assume they were already "broken in" then. Fresh out of the box speakers could sound harsh. I know that you didn't go for the Triangle Comete EZ but Triangle has brought out a newer model, the "triangle 40th anniversary comète" which I bough last year. I am very happy with them. The treble is outstanding, very clear, detailed and responsive. A big improvement on the Revel M16 in that area. Review triangle 40th anniversary comète It plays the complex music I listen to very well. That said, your new Gold Note A3 Evo speakers look very beautiful and get good reviews so I am sure you will enjoy them.

Looking back I got lucky with the MA100 Silver They were a lot better than most of the speakers I heard between 1000 to 2000 range. As I said just let down by the bass not having enough texture.
I did not hear any unicorn speakers Speakers that performed better than their price point apart from the MA that I had in my system
I watched every YouTube video on the speakers I wanted to hear and read countless reviews. My biggest takeaway is you have to hear for yourself, and reviewers' tastes in sound might be different

Often difficult to know which reviews are impartial too.

Reviews can only shortlist. You have to hear speakers for yourself.
I cannot even begin to understand the discrepancy between some reviews of speakers I've read and what I actually heard when listening to them. Some needed no more than 30s to eliminate themselves from the proceedings forever.
I know there are room dependencies and system matching, but even so a few were simply ghastly.

Name and shame please Martin. I am sensitive to member's equipment so I will exercise some restraint. The two absolute worst speakers I have ever heard, after reading positive impressions about them (no, let's face it, the Naim received rave reviews) were the Naim DBL and Lumley Reference. There were no redeeming features of their sound whatsoever. Two that I just didn't like were the Wilson Benesch Act Two and Zingali Overture 3. The WBs were cold and soulless and the Zingalis had such a cuppy horn sound in the midrange that I couldn't get past it.
