I just looked at the top 10 and a bit more thoughtful than what usually happens when you come across a top favourite albums selection. I do not listen to enough female based music to really have a strong opinion.

I'm still absorbing the long list and don't have time to comment now. Certainly the top 10 has some surprises.

Interesting. No Kate Bush or Björk. I suspect the list would be quite different if it was done in the UK.

Female vocal not my favourite and many I don't know Prefer the tracks on Joni Mitchell's live Miles of Aisles to Blue and that is only 6/10 for me. Fleetwood Mac Rumours - made by women.... ?
Best so far for me Sade - Diamond Life
The Staple Singers but not Mavis ?!
Heart - Dreamboat Annie is good but Little Queen is better
The Pretenders - made by a woman, ok more or less Chrissie Hynde
Bonnie Raitt - Nick Of Time is a good one
X - Los Angeles. This is a punk band with one woman. The classic track of all time The World's a Mess; It's In My Kiss and nothing else worth having
Nice to see The Slits but Cut is the wrong album
Sonic Youth is not just Kim Gordon and Sister is nowhere near their best
Cocteau Twins is not just Liz Fraser
B52s have male and female members...
The Shelby Lynne album is wrong, Love, Shelby is the one
No 141. Joanna Newsom - they are having a laugh
Inaccurate, loads missing and so many I will never get to even sample
If bands with females in are included... nothing by Low ?!

For me, it's too broad a concept. There are so many female "singers" whose "music" I do not "appreciate" that I could never make an objective argument for, or against, their choices. I will take issue with the choice of Emmylou Harris's "Wrecking Ball," though, at #46.
A: It should be higher. B: It should be Pieces Of The Sky.
While Wrecking Ball is a fine album, despite the rather murky sound Daniel Lanois seemed to favour, "Pieces..." is the seminal album for Emmylou, for Female country singers in general, and in fact, country music itself. With that one album she more or less dragged country out of the polished (and antiseptic) "Countrypolitan" era at the same time as, in Texas, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson et al were doing much the same with "The Bakersfield Sound" which morphed into the "Outlaw Country," movement. Not only that, but she proved country could have crossover appeal without sacrificing itself on the altar of the string orchestra.
Pieces Of The Sky also includes "Boulder to Birmingham" which relates her feelings of grief in the years following the death of Gram Parsons, and is still probably still the most famous of Emmylou's own songs.
Oh, yes, and putting Fleetwood Mac in there as a "female" artist is beyond a joke.

It's someone's opinion. It's going to differ from almost anyone else's. There are some really thoughtfully chosen selections in this list. There are also some dumb ones, chosen because there was a female in the band. On balance, then, I would say it makes a fair stab at it.
Except for one thing.
Dusty in Memphis is rated waaaaaaay too low. That's a top 5 effort in any poll of albums you might care to devise. Whether recorded by man, woman or anything beyond or between.

Lots of albums I don't know. And artists too. Have some listening to do.
Some surprises indeed.

Sade - Diamond Life . . The Shelby Lynne album is wrong, Love, Shelby is the one . . No 141. Joanna Newsom - they are having a laugh The Sade is the pinnacle of her career, never bettered, and a superb all-rounder with stunning recording, too. I agree that Love, Shelby is better. Just a Little Lovin', her homage to Dusty, is also good. Joanna Newsom shouldn't rank higher than The Birdie Song, and I think I'd take the latter.

Also very good albums in my opinion:
Norah Jones - Come Away With Me (should be higher than #140) Marianne Faithfull - Broken English (rude but wonderful) Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club (good times well recorded) k d lang - Ingenue (one of the most perfect female voices of all time, up there with Karen Carpenter) Roberta Flack - First Take (with the wonderful First Time Ever I Saw Your Face) Portishead - Dummy (fab trip-hop) Rickie Lee Jones - Pirates (lazy Californian delivery style) Janis Joplin - Pearl (just unique) Nina Simone - I Put a Spell On You (incredible songs with emotional delivery)
