I'm currently watching a very interesting program on Sky Arts (now free on Freesat) called Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President. If it's on again I recommend giving it a go. Carter is not a modern president I know a great deal about, but I'm learning, and he seems quite a guy.
The program before it was good too; The Art of Drumming. Paradiddling, cheesy triplets and flam taps plus the basics of military-influenced “rudimental” drumming. I never knew hitting a bit of animal hide with a stick was so complicated. Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) stole the show for me, and that's as much for his personality as his playing. Another one to watch out for when Sky repeat it, as they no doubt will.

Us drummers are very under valued and very much misunderstood. Not only are we usually the most intelligent in the band but we also are the best at fighting. Win, win

Sorry, I mean OTHER musicians always joke about drummers, but I honestly never realised exactly how technical drumming actually is until I watched that program. You should see the stick (no pun intended) guitarists get on the Bass forum I frequent. "Guitarded," is one word that gets bandied about. Honestly, you'd think we all played at 11 and drowned the rest of the band out or something. Everyone knows that's the drummer's job. Or as I explained to someone only yesterday, " when they tell you to 'turn it down' just knock a bit of treble off. That worked for me for years."

Watched an enthralling documentary on Billie Holliday, based on taped audio interviews with those who knew her. Really a very sad story of someone who was effectively a victim of physical and emotional abuse, exploited for financial gain throughout her short life. There's also the mystery of what happened to the journalist who made the recordings but who died in suspicious circumstances before completing her work. Highly recommended. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000t8qv/billie-in-search-of-billie-holiday
