I would have thought any USB drive would work, but a rotating drive or anything needing substantial power would need an external PSU.
A decent pen drive like the Kingston ones should work well.

I have added a jitterbug to the final spare USB input (got one cheap off eBay). The change is very subtle with a sense of depth, flow and micro-detail being further improved. So I now have 2 IFi silencers 1 Oehlbach Pureclock and 1 Audioquest Jitterbug connected to the 4 USB inputs on the board. It is a bit overkill but I am enjoying the difference they make. The board is on 2 sticky BR pads and a small weight added

I'm just on the 2 ifi iSilencers here, the output taken from the 3rd USB. I'll keep an eye out for a Jitterbug.

What kills a Samsung pen drive ?

USB drives just die suddenly. It's not that frequent but it happens, irrespective of brand.

What is the best and longest life ?

Kingston, as I said earlier. They make memory and their USB drives are often certified for more robust use than the cheap no-name ones.
USB and SSD drives have different interfaces but use similar chips inside.

Name rather than type then.
Assumed Samsung was good.
Want to go file based eventually and not lose everything !

I would say Samsung make very good SSDs, fast and reliable and I believe we've only had one failure in about 120.
Kingston make the best certified USB drives, robust and corporate reliable. The Data Traveler series are a good midrange product.

The trouble with the Kingston pen drive is that they tend to be encrypted

What does that mean for us ?

Post by MartinT on Dec 23, 2019 13:03:14 GMT
There are different series, John. Some are designed for encryption protection, others are standard drives.

What does that mean for us ? You don't want encryption for streaming.

So no good at all for music files ?
Type slowly

You don't want encrypted USB drives for music storage as the streamers generally don't understand encryption or have the means to decrypt files.
Why would you want to encrypt commonly available files, anyway? There are no secrets in music files that require encryption.

Can encryption be undone ?
