This is inspired from Petra thread I was thinking of music and experiences that have inspired your musical taste and appreciation. As Tom pointed out this is quite different to albums that I play the most
As a kid, I enjoyed music but did not really get into music till about 16. Before getting into music I was mostly listening to the Radio and watching music on Top of the pops.
This all started to change when I saw Blue Oyster Cult play Don't Fear The Reaper showing them live with their laser show It funny I did not like the studio version, but the live version was a lot better to my ears. So my first album
This started me on a discovery of Heavy Metal and Heavy Rock I started buying albums, going to concerts and reading magazines. I had a desire to learn as much as I could and discover as much as I could. I was buying 2 to 3 albums a week.
I think the next big influence was just how hooked I became on going to concerts I saw Diamond Head play a near-empty concert at the Woolwich Odeon due to the riots the night before the band gave it everything I came out feeling ecstatic I been to a few concerts before but this was the first time I was so ecstatic afterwards Music became my drug. IAfter that experience I must have averaged about 2 to 3 concerts a week and did that for nearly 15 years.
The next stage of my music appreciation a friend lent me some Jazz guitar-based albums and I really loved Bireli Lagrene Inferno and Kazumi Watanbe The Spice Of Life Too I also feel learning to play the guitar lead me to read and discovering lots of artists I would often hunt down hard to find guitar-based albums

This leads to me finding love for Gypsy based jazz and Jazz guitar-based music. It would take me several years before getting into Jazz.
The funny thing throughout this time I had a component-based system the idea of getting a serious HiFi system did not even enter the equation it was just about the discovery of music and the experience of live music.
As I started exploring Jazz I would go into HMV in Oxford Street and listen to albums a few times before taking a risk on buying them I was still feeling my way into Jazz music I discovered Dr L Subramaniam Global Fusion that opened my ears to more exotic based sounds and also Strunz and Farah Live that gave me appreciation for modern Flamenco mixed with Jazz elements
I think my tastes for a while just slowly expended and the next big step for me was getting Spotify to sound good This in some ways takes me back to when I was in my late teens, 20s and 30s where I am just discovering so much new music So over the last year I developed a taste for modern cello-based music I also have an appreciation for the haunting beauty of Max Richter
