Why don’t you try the Volumio Spotify Connect2 plugin in Volumio, it’s what I use and just go via my Spotify app on phone or iPad.
That way you use the Spotify app as you would normally and just select the Volumio device for playback.

Edit- maybe Spotify issue issue right enough, I’m on an older version on a Sparky board using Volumio 2.348

The Sparky image will not work on a Pi.
Spotify Connect plug-in works fine on all versions of Volumio. It's worth getting it working.
The alternative is a complex fix that I covered recently (to get playlists showing in Volumio). I can't find the link on my phone, will find it in the morning.

Here is the post I made about it... theaudiostandard.net/post/143220/threadThe fix is complex and requires you to be able to use PuTTY or similar to modify the index.js file in the correct folder. Here is the essential part: Open a browser and go to this URL: 54.86.144.136:8888/Click the button "Log in with Spotify" and plug in your Spotify Premium account credentials. Now copy the refresh token Enable SSH by going to: volumio.local/dev/ Click the "Enable" button under SSH. You need to edit the file index.js at line 451 and replace the 'xxx' with your refresh token. Save the file. The file is located here: /data/plugins/music_service/spop/ You will need to login to your Volumio at your IP address, with the password Volumio, using a utility like PuTTY. I do NOT recommend doing this unless you're already sufficiently familiar with Linux. No-one else can do it for you or send you the modified index.js file as it's personalised to your Spotify Premium account. It's much easier to get the Spotify Connect plug-in working.

It could be a Spotify update. On Android they do not automatically update but if you downloaded the latest version then perhaps this is the issue What us actually happening Can you connect to Volumio via connect to a device. Are the control buttons working or not working.

It was Spotify updating that killed the display of playlists etc. in Volumio, John. Current Volumio builds all need the fix above.
