Promised myself a listen to all the Caravan albums I have (98%) with the recent improvements to the system. Hear what I haven't heard before. Past few days have been a Caravan fest. Listening for the first time to them all together, comparing and sometimes contrasting. Will go through them again soon picking out the stratospheric highlights and the 'must listen to again'
Formed from part/s of The Wilde Flowers which also hatched Soft Machine and others
They had me at the first album, self titled. The whole album is great, but finishing with the wonderful 9 minute Where but for Caravan would I ? seals their fate as one of my best bands ever
If I could do it all over again, I'd do it all over you the same but different. Last but one track the 14 minute For Richard / Warlock is heaven and becomes one of their most performed numbers live.
In the Land of Grey and Pink their most well known album and arguably their best features the wonderful 22 minute Nine Feet Underground Cannot hear enough of that. The Steve Wilson remaster gives us multiple versions and they are all great. Stuck in the kitchen for months being played over and over. A wrench to move it to the next queue.
Waterloo Lily If this was there only album it would be enough to guarantee them a place as one of my all time favourites.
End of part One, and almost the end of the band........

Caravan are the same but different Different band at different times. Probably In the land of grey and pink as this is when they had been together for a while and really gelled.
The first 5 albums are essential for me All are good however.
Big change in emphasis with For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night from lots of organ to lots of viola as a lead instrument

Part Two
Richard and Dave Sinclair gone and a moment when Caravan almost ceased to exist. A big part of Caravan with keynote organ, great bass and around half the vocals as well as some songwriting
Fortunately for us they recruited Geoffrey Richardson whose viola had a lot of the music to play. Less space given to a returning Dave Sinclair on organ. Good and bad This always used to be my favourite Caravan album. Now I struggle to separate Land of Grey and Pink. Both of those albums are a minimum for your Caravan collection.
As a punter I was oblivious at the time. They were still my wonderful Caravan, albeit going in a different direction. Gig they did at Reading Uni was one of my best gigs ever
Change in direction with Richardson's viola and a foray into orchestral with Caravan and the New Symphonia A good enough album but broadly Girls who grow plump with orchestra done live and a little ponderous at times as bands with orchestras can be.
Cunning Stunts, yes it is a spoonerism, with ex Curver Air Mike Wedgewood joining. Not a good move for me. Do not like his voice although the album is still pretty good. Bass less in evidence too.
Blind dog at St. Dunstans on a similar level. Good, not superb
Better by far Another good album, well worth having. Then they split !
end of part 2
