Name an album that goes against the main body of music by that artist.
I'll start with 10,000Hz Legend by Air. All those carefully musical melodies and hooky tunes are absent. This is hard, edgy and, in places, quite aggressive music from the French band that usually oozes beauty in a modern presentation. I don't play it often, but when I do it's always something of a shock and I wonder what their mindset was at the time. Stunningly fabulous recording and dynamics to die for, by the way. Just don't expect it to be nice.

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
Strange composition involving orchestra and Floyd themselves. High concept album which half pays off. I find myself wanting more of the bits I like and a lot less of the rest. Not really like anything else of theirs before or since. Fat Old Sun is a classic, though.

David Geffen sued Neil Young because he produced two albums that didn't (in his opinion) sound like Neil Young and he was violating his contract by recording ‘unrepresentative’ albums, which is pretty funny because there had never been such a thing as a formulaic Neil Young album.
When NY was signed to Geffen's new label, he turned out 'Old Ways', which was deemed to be "too country".
So, NY decided to provide an album that was formulaic! He gave Geffen what he wanted - an album that was "more rock & roll"
'Everybody's Rockin' '
Geffen thought it was still too country. So he sued for around 3 million-ish. The claim was that both albums were “musically uncharacteristic of Young’s previous recordings”
NY hit Geffen with a counter suit for breach of contract, claiming he’d been promised artistic free rein.

I'm also nominating Portishead's Third. They have only released four albums but, unlike the other three which are dripping with trip-hop loveliness, I find Third is harsh, verging on ugly with the exception of The Rip. It's a very difficult album to love whereas the other three are superb.
