DISCLAIMER: I have never heard an LP12 of any incarnation. I'd actually like to hear both a vintage and fully loaded modern deck at some stage. When I was browsing t'internet I saw a banner for the latest LP12 from a dealer. It's difficult not to be a bit shocked by the price, around 18k, but what I was much more surprised about were the claims that I looked at on the Linn website. I will quote directly. www.linn.co.uk/sources/turntables/completeThe Klimax LP12 is described as 'best of the best' in the headline. That could mean best of their decks or any other I guess. But the opening quote from the blurb leaves you in no doubt - < Our flagship Klimax LP12 turntable offers the pinnacle of vinyl reproduction today, setting the benchmark worldwide for all other turntables on the market.> Really? What is their evidence for this?? Quite an amazing statement, I'm surprised it's even allowed ... Your 18k won't keep you at the top of the tree for long < because it's modular, you can update it whenever we release a new upgrade. > Not sure what I think about that - not like updating a Beresford DAC of course but then if you can afford 19k for the deck you may not baulk at the cost of the subsequent upgrades. It might be a great turntable, even a world-beater but whilst of course I'm not in the market for a tt of this price, I find all this stuff a real turn-off.

It's hard to see where your £18k goes. The LP12 remains a belt-drive suspended subchassis design, just like those of AR, Dunlop, Ariston, Thorens and other decks of almost 40 years ago. It wasn't even their invention. Yes, you get a beefed up chassis and electronic speed control now, but where exactly is the innovation? The Ekos arm is a pretty old design, too, not that that is a bad thing, but there cannot have been R&D spend on it for an awful long time.
£5k could be an acceptable price if you like the sound (I don't), but £18k will only appeal to those who see price as equivalent to quality. This is a cash cow that will move few units to those with more money than sense.

I'm sure you could sell it for a packet, Mike. The Aro is rare now. Use it to finance something worthwhile.

The Linn is very good at what it does but it's just not for me. In the numerous shows and demos I have been at in the last 20 years, not one single LP12 based system has held my attention for more than a minute, so I'd not spend £1,800 on one of any spec, never mind multiplying that by ten!

Have you heard one of the most recent Chris? Yes, several times, but as I said, only briefly as it always made me cringe! If you go to the North-West Audio show next year, you'll be able to hear one.

That's a good idea Chris, I'd like to do that anyway ... I'm wondering whether the Linn decks are often demo'd with gear that doesn't do them any favours. The only Linn deck I've ever heard was the Axis, with a Naim Nait and Linn Index speakers - not a sound I could live with but suspect the amp and speakers were the culprits there.

LP12 was a better sound than a partly modded Technics. Not as good when I modded the Technics rather a long way
