Alan Hovhaness. Beautiful music, not for every day - but every few months I have another dose. In ecstasy over these two yesterday ... mystically beautiful, soaring fanfares ...

I hate myself, but I can't look at that list of Reiner CDs without the fact that you've listed CD34 twice and missed CD35 sticking out like a sore thumb to me. Sorry. If I don't mention it though it'll drive me mad(der). Interesting to see Alan Hovhannes on the track listing too. I have his "And God Created Great Whales" which is...interesting. I gave it a mention here and here

Try his "And God Created Great Whales," Jerry. You know me and "modern" composers, but that's the album that turned me on to Hovhaness. I vaguely remember posting it in this thread a long time ago. I only listened to it ("a symphonic poem for orchestra and recorded whale sounds") because, on the face of it, that sounded so absolutely up itself, not to mention completely daft. It's sort of on the edge of my "No! That's far too modern!" radar, but I enjoyed it, and it led me to his more traditional works. His "Sinfonia #6 op. 173 "Celestial gate" is another goodie.
