Make the most of it, Martin, it probably won't happen again for quite a while! Great debut recording of Vaughan Williams' 9th symphony by Boult. The recording quality is astonishing for its age - 1958.

Lovely album of Vivaldi concertos for multiple soloists. Sorry, no, not the Four Seasons.

Look forward to listening to that Jerry, even without 'Seasons' ... Talking of the boy Vivaldi I have just scored an lp I have been after for ages - Klaus Thunemann playing the Bassoon concertos. Ever since I heard these performed live at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester I have wanted to get a copy of this.

Contemporary American classical by David Stock. It's really rather good!

I like this a lot. Violin and fortepiano (old style piano). The sounds of the two instruments blend so well. This is how the music was intended to sound. Music by CPE Bach - one of Johan Sebastian's many children.

Excellent cello playing here from John Michel in the Beethoven sonatas. Lively, articulate, soulful. Very fine sq, too. I must have sampled a dozen, including most of the 'big name' cellists, before settling on this one.

I'm not usually enamoured of the viola as a solo instrument, but for some reason this viola sonata by Francis Pott (who he?) just hits the spot and I find it very listenable indeed. The remainder of the disc may or may not be recommendable for its song cycle. Not for me.

More viola!
This time a transcription of Elgar's cello concerto (Heresy! I hear Paul cry). It really works well for me - astonishingly well played by both viola soloist and orchestra as well.

See if you enjoy these disjointed (by western standards) Armenian rhythms as much as I do ...

Last night's Prom - Handel's Israel in Egypt www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05b9t6r--- hmm. Simon Preston's recording on Decca does it rather better. And I don't know what Part 1 of the Proms was, but it wasn't Israel in Egypt! That is all in part 2. I've given up on the Proms and moved onto this ...

Not heresy at all, it's such a magnificent piece of music that even playing it on the viola and pairing it with Schnittke cannot diminish it. Actually, I've got the Rivka Golani version (same arrangement) knocking around somewhere. At least she had the decency to pair it with some Bax.
