The next machine, however, was one of the best components I've ever owned in my life. A Sony SCD-1 SACD player, bought from Audio-T ex demo and a fab piece of high end Japanese audio exotica. I had it upgraded twice by Audiocom with PSU enhancements and a superclock. It was worth it, being one of the best CD spinners I'd ever heard at the time and an excellent SACD player. It weighed something like 26kg and took almost 30s to play a disc from closing the drawer, so it wasn't one for being hurried. The build quality was beyond anything I'd ever owned apart from my Chord amplifier.

Hah, yes, I did join the club if briefly, Chris. No valves, though.

It was considerably heavier than my power amp. I saw several times a person go to lift it and having to have a second go at it as it hadn't moved! The finish was really superb, even the drawer closed without sound.

My next CD Player was a Naim CDI. I’d been looking to upgrade my Sony for a while, but just couldn’t find anything I liked. My Dad had a Naim CDI at the time, and tried that and was so impressed I bought my own. It had its failings though. Taking an absolute age to change track, and half the time not managing it at all, so I had to listen whole albums which is no bad thing I guess. This is a point when I’d argue Naim made decent sources at quite reasonable prices.

My next CD player is my final one, a superb Ayre C-5xe SACD player (later upgraded to MP level and then again with Coherent PSU mods). Using a Pioneer drive mech, this machine plays CDs, DVD-As and SACDs with equal aplomb. I kinda knew it would be my last disc spinner and I chose well. Nice build (although not in the SCD-1 class) and faultless operation - although navigating around DVD-A menus without visuals was always a tricky performance. The piece de resistance is the sound quality. It didn't get a Stereophile A+ rating for nothing. Detailed, dynamic and wide bandwidth, you get it all. CDs sound great, SACDs are even better when the disc allows.

Mine was a Sharp .....a DX110 iirc. I bought it because it was the cheapest full size player I could get. I worked at Richer Sounds at the time and the Sharp didn’t sound as good as those only a bit more expensive but they were all inferior to vinyl so I didn’t really care that much. I picked up one of those Toshiba XRJ9 mini players a bit later too. It was a bit less good than the Sharp.
I binned CD as a lost cause for many years a little later. I’d moved to a proper Hi-Fi shop and still didn’t like what I heard from CD.

The very first CD player I owned was a Wadia 861, which I converted to an SE variant within a couple of months back in 2004. Only ever had transport and dac's to this point plus a big change in personal circumstances so the Wadia was purchased, still one of the finest single box musically engaging players ever produced imho.

Next up, I bought a Naim CDX2 from our friend Mike. My CDI had become quite a lot more quirky to use and play songs, so I had lost confidence in it. At that point, I thought Naim could do know wrong, so wanted the next best that I could afford and Mike mentioned he had the CDX2 for sale. It was quite a good CD Player although I didn't have it long because I wanted to move into the streaming world so ended up buying a Naim NDX instead. In hindsight, this was very silly, because it never came close to the CDX2.
