Mine was a Marantz CD65IISE which I bought from a good friend of my Dad, from money I’d earned working at the local Spar shop, when I was about 16. I loved that CD Player, it looked a little like this one.  |

Mine was a Philips CD104 that I bought at a show price at the Heathrow Penta show. It was delivered a week or so later. Beautifully built, it was a heavy bugger. Nice machine, if a little slow to close the drawer and cue up.  |

One of these...  I bought it partly after a recommendation from a friend, and partly due to the fact that so many CD players at the time were based on Philips mechanisms I decided it wasn't worth paying more for some pretty plastic on the outside of the bit that was doing all of the work. The first CD I bought for it was Elton John's "Sleeping With The Past" and yes, I have still got it. |

It was a secondhand Mission DAD-7000. I bought it from The Music Room in Glasgow with the £150 change I had left in my budget from buying a new turntable. It was 1992(ish) and I came late to CD. I gave it to a friend, who I saw for the first time in years, just a couple of weeks ago. I asked about it and he told me it had finally given up the ghost only recently. It looked like this:  |

Marantz CD52 SE that I bought with the insurance money I received after junky scum broke into our house and stole my record collection as well as many other sentimental non replaceable family items 😢 So I thought I might as well go CD as it was better than vinyl they said. So complete new CD system duly installed in 1983. Still have the CD player and the Rotel Amp.  |

I’ve only had three cd players as far as I can remember ... The one I had the longest was the Consonance CD-120. Whilst I had that I tried a TEAC VRDS-10 but didn’t get on with it at all in spite of the great build quality, even using the matching DAC. Maybe it needed a better DAC. Because I play a cd maybe once a year I 'downgraded' my player to a Shanling CD-S 100 MKII which I have now.    |

My second CD player was a largely forgettable Philips CD-650. It was not better than the CD-104 in any meaningful way and very plasticky in build. My third, however, was an exceedingly tasty Pioneer PD-91. A superb chunk of Japanese grandeur which sounded glorious.  |

My second CD player was a Naim CD-I, which I won in a competition in Hi-fi World magazine. The task was to devise a slogan beginning with the letters N-A-I-M and I somewhat sycophantically suggested " Now Analogue Isn't Mandatory"  The above is an image snaffled off th'web but I'll try and find the copy of the magazine where the photo of 'the big handover' from a member of staff from a Naim dealership was published. I enjoyed it a lot and it hung around for quite a while but it was absolutely awful in cold weather - sometimes it took 50 or 60 pokes of the play button to make it initialise a disc. |

Because with an external clock it was perceived to be the best, and it sounded like it was

Because I was offered a shed load of money

Marantz SA-11S3
Why did I chose it ?
Because of the awesome build quality and sound

A basic Philips, followed quickly by a Marantz (which by all accounts was a souped-up Philips anyway, but it did sound better).
All this in early 80's so very little choice.

I've never seen a 101 in that wooden housing before. Certainly makes it look nicer. I found its sound to be rather hard, though. |

I was a senior design engineer at Philips Cambridge at the time, and about a year later the staff shop had better and way cheaper players. I should have kept the Sony for nostalgic sake though !
I do have an immaculate and perfect with remote control, Technics SL-P1200, it looks cool.............. Not in use or on show as it lacks the micro-detail of the Marantz SA-11S3.

For the same reasons, I wish I had kept my Pioneer PD-91. Fantastic machine with the fastest drawer closing and TOC reading of any machine I've ever known.

Initially, I upgraded my first CD player by adding an Audio Alchemy DAC, but then my second CD player was a Sony CDP-X339ES which I bought off of my Dad when he upgraded.  I had this CD player for quite a long time and it was surprisingly good. I compared it to many CD players costing up to around £1000 and this always came out on top, which was surprising as it only retailed for around £350 when bought new. |

My next machine was only half a player, a CD transport. I bought an Audio Research CDT1 transport and used it with my Assemblage DAC. The Philips CDM12.1 drive mech was good but I never really fell in love with this player despite using it for a couple of years.  |
