Interesting to see that Kate Bush is releasing a remastered album catalogue on vinyl and cd. I thought the early albums sounded fantastic but with the advent of digital they became rather compressed and dull ... www.katebush.com/news/album-remasters-and-rare-tracksUnsurprisingly she was involved with the remastering so who knows if she will do a better job this time round, especially considering that the other guy involved, James Guthrie, was an engineer she used to work with. I wouldn't leap to pre-order any of these until there's some feedback. I will probably pass anyway, as they have cunningly spread 10 albums across 3 box sets at £90 a go on Amazon ... No expense spared to take your money!

But how were they remastered ? Is there a difference between the CD and vinyl ? Was any analogue compression used ? Any tilting on EQ's ?
I wish they would say !

That's a pet hate of mine Dave!
We're expected to shell out £90 without a shred of info. Info should at least be on her website if they can't be bothered to print any technical details on the physical releases.

It rather depends, also, on how the recording was laid down. The more Kate had a hand in them, the more dense and lacking in dynamics they became.
If Bernie Grundman were involved, I wouldn't hesitate.

It is unlikely that the original master tapes would have any compression.

It is unlikely that the original master tapes would have any compression. It is highly improbable that the tapes have no compression. Compressors would have been in use on every single vocal part and every single instrument as it was being laid down.

Agreed, sort of. The sort of analogue compression they use when mastering CD's can be overall and quite large. I did some research on Rubber Soul and although as you say they would have used individual compressors, clearly the original tapes were a lot less compressed than the actual releases. I have multiple versions including the 3.75ips tape version once available over the counter in Boots, they are all very different.
Abbey road have said recently remastering was compressed on CD but not as much on vinyl !
Go figure as they say somewhere....................

I bought the Audio Fidelity remaster of The Sensual World. It's great to have a clean copy but the sound is a bit eccentric - it's really cloaked in compression. You keep waiting for it to leap out the speakers but it never does.
I tried their remaster of Hounds but it was even worse sonically and actually had to return it as there were so many pressing faults on it.

I played The Kick Inside last night on Spotify and was quite disappointed. Thinking I had changed a setting, I played something else I know well and all was fine. I wonder what master Spotify used for the early KB albums? It all sounded a bit tame and limited.

My original vinyl of Kick sounds good, won't be bothering with a remaster for that ...

Yes, mine too. It's still limited compared with the best recordings, but better than any digital version I've heard so far.

Agreed - the best KB recording I have, by a long way aswell, is the ATR Mastercut of Lionheart. Quite exceptional!

I see that Amazon now has pre-order copies of single albums at a reasonable 17.99.
I will buy Hounds for sure as that's the one hole I have to fill.

Interesting. I have 50 Words for Snow on vinyl, didn't know it was rare.
