Cool thread Gaz.
If you don’t mind me asking, do you think that damping tape would work well in my tvc preamp? There’s no damping of any sort In the casework and you’ve got me thinking.

Let us know how the I2S-over-HDMI interface works out. I've never seen this used outside of a component before.

Read through the thread ...
Assume Oppos were made in the 1000s so it was worthwhile to mod them
I wonder what we can do with our own kit, having the courage to do it of course.
The damping looks relatively easy

From reading about the silent coat product it sounds like the aluminium is there to convert vibrational energy into heat and harmlessly dissipate it. My concern is that coating it with something else will impede it’s ability to perform said function - any thoughts on this?

Check it with a meter (it might be plastic coated) and/or don't let it come into contact with circuitry.

Martin, its not plastic coated and I did exactly as you suggested. All that exposed aluminium didn't sit right with me (who knows what might be affected?) so wanted to make it as electrically inert as possible. The mechanical properties of the stuff would take care of any vibration issues, after all if you paint a heater it still gets warm and still does it's job. BTW Updated my AOS post, the i2s connection to the Directstream sounds superb, a big improvement over coaxial, even though I was using probably one of the best digital interconnects. Disc playback..holy moley, I'm interested in CDs again!
And have SACD digital output to my Dac as DSD to look forward to. Quite happy now that CD is a dying format, pick them up quite cheap! Comfortably the best digital I've had in my system, what is interesting is that the HDMI cable used for i2s connection makes a bigger difference that I expected, more so that swapping out interconnects or power cables.

Nice. Is that linear PSU a custom jobby for the Oppo? Yes indeedy.
Made a big improvement too with both music and movies. Seen all the mods I did on my Oppo as a "whole", each one moving toward making it as good a digital transport as possible.

Fitted the case dampening on the Oppo to maximise disc playback, did the same back in the day with my Marantz CD63 KI and made a good improvement.
The Oppo has vibration creating parts, with a passive Pre I'd be less inclined to worry about it.

If your handy ( or learn to be) with a soldering iron, swapping wires out or whatever you can make your kit sound better. Why not try it?
In a lot of mod situations, if you can wire a plug you can improve your hifi...go for it!

Gaz
Considering maxi, using the new psu you have fitted by looking at the power rails on the main dac board and your i2s output section, I can see atleast four avenues foor you to explore.
With so care and attention you can obtain do very respectable sounds from them imho
