I’ve recently been trying to figure out what it is that attracts me to a particular music artist, and have come up with the following.
Rhythm Nice tune Melody Singing, not shouting
So what does it for you?

Don't know. Have tried many times to work it out
I have all sorts of favourites that are opposite to others. I love both Low, quiet and slow The Fall, usually heavy riffs, loud often disjointed, nearly all shouting with no singing at all ! Dead simple, Eno as well as complicated Gentle Giant

If only I could identify the 'magic essence' of a good song! A few things...
- unusual chord changes - unusual key changes - unusual instruments - characterful voice (doesn't have to be perfect) - good bass line - atmospheric - tight playing and timing

I've come to the conclusion that it's totally indefinable, in my case at least.
I like my classical a bit melodic, but that doesn't necessarily apply to my taste in rock.
I love good musicianship, but I also enjoy listening to punk rock.
I'm a fan of relaxing "chillout" style music, but I quite like Motörhead.
Many of these "likes" are dependant on my mood. I probably wouldn't follow Steeleye Span's 'Parcel of Rogues' with Lemmy and 'Ace of Spades', but then again, I might. I could argue that I like the "best" of any given genre that appeals to me, but then there would be endless arguments about what the best actually is, or was. I either like things, or I don't, and life's too short for trying to work out why that should be.
If you play me something I can probably put into words what I like, or dislike, about it. Working out why one dislikes something, though, is probably the simpler task. Ultimately, the less time spent analysing, the more time is left over for discovering.

I love the contrasts Paul. I enjoy good musicianship I love the guitar, violin and cello. I enjoy music that usually quite tight with a good drummer who has good sense of rhythm. Deep lyrics help. But of course there plenty of stuff that does not fit this mould that I love. Music will always throw stuff at you that challenges your perceptions from time to time and long may that continue.

Stumbled across a great contrast today
Mekons - Rock n Roll. Seems like they wanted it to sound like a shambles. Good music and very enjoyable
Was (not Was) - Boo. Staggered at the sound quality and what they have in there. Such a well made album, as I expect from Was. The best modern soul I can think of

Many of these "likes" are dependant on my mood. Yeah I get that, I find exactly the same, sometimes I'll put an album on and just can't get on with it, and then on another day I will play it over and over. No rhyme or reason for it, other than mood.

Then there's music like some Tangerine Dream or Jon Hopkins that just breaks every rule, having no tangible rhythm or melody.
