Hi all, long time no post.
So, my SEG now needs some attention. I hardly listen to CD's but when I do I use a completely vanilla SEG and a ankaka battery. Fast forward a few months and a quick shufty around this forum and I notice things have moved on a lick. I've just spoken to Stan and he specifically tells me to get a Chinese supply capable of 15V and then give him a call. So, this has been ordered. Stan confirms my SEG will work with the 15V supply with no additional mods. I've read about the SuperCap box to sit in between the PSU and the SEG. I'll wait to purchase one when it surfaces from Stan's development labs . All good so far. So, are there any additional "named" mods or tweaks that I'm missing out on?
Thanks
Andrew

Worth putting it on some really decent isolation feet and use some kind of weight on top of the SEQ I am using the BR pads The supercap is supposed to be good and Stan can do that for you. Most of us are waiting for the PSU which I am hoping to hear soon

The PSU? Are you talking about the little box which goes between the seg and the 15V PSU? Or is this a new specific 15V PSU that stan is developing alongside the Supercap box which site between the SEG and it's PSU?

SEG Mods to date:
Use 15V PSU Stan supercap PSU (as yet unnamed, I have a prototype) between 15V and SEG Internal upgrade with Tokin 47kuF 5.5V supercaps x 2 Black Ravioli pads x 3 Granite mat on top Mode 3 (data recovered clock) on all inputs

The PSU? Are you talking about the little box which goes between the seg and the 15V PSU? Or is this a new specific 15V PSU that stan is developing alongside the Supercap box which site between the SEG and it's PSU? The little box comes in two parts. One part is the power supply that connects to the mains. The other part connects between the mains power supply and the SEG. The mains power supply can either be a low current unregulated linear power supply that I can provide, or any linear power supply that owners might already possess. The production version will have a switch at the back of the box that will allow you to set it for 15V or 12V. There are after all quite a few people who have invested in a 12V linear power supply at great cost. So I have designed the box in such a way that it can handle the 12V as well. The output voltage will obviously then be 12V. I must add that the unregulated power supply that I am able to provide is a 12V one, but it will be capable of producing 15V, as well as 12V. Don't ask how I am able to do that... In the case of the SEG the DAC will sound better at 15V due to the way that the discrete output stage has been designed by me. The same result also applies to the old TC-7520, TC-7520SE, and TC-7520SEG that have the Gator PCB upgrade. I know that many people still own one of those and are more than happy with the results without having any urge to get a different DAC. So I have included them in my thoughts as well when designed that little box of tricks. I also have to add that the Bushmaster I and II, and the Caiman II sound better with the box to my ears, but they don't benefit as much as the SEG since they don't have a discrete output stage.

OK, well the new PSU has been posted so it's on its way. I've actually been listened to CD's again 8-0 !! Anyways, my manual for the SEG is very well packed away in the loft. This is a bit embarrassing, how do select mode 3?

Best SOUND SIGNATURE Mode
The Caiman SEG firmware is capable of processing the incoming digital data in four different ways, which in turn can produce a different sound signature and signal stability from individual source equipment. To change between sound signatures and modes, press and hold down the SELECT button for about two seconds. Release the SELECT button as soon as the RED STATUS LED lights up. The firmware will now automatically switch to the next data processing option. No LED blinks = Mode-0 = S/PDIF clock signal One LED blinks = Mode-1 = optimized XTAL processing Two LED blinks = Mode-2 = PLL clock processing mode Three LED blinks = Mode-3 = DATA recovered clock processing mode www.beresford.me/downloads/TC-7535_R4.pdfGoogle is your friend

You'll soon realise that mode 3 is the best sounding mode.

PSU installed and mode 3 selected. Yep level of detail has increased by some margin. Looking forward to listening to some silver discs again. Probably wait awhile until I get the PCB modded with the 5.5V caps.

Silly question but here goes. I own a TEAC VRDS25X which has been extensively modded. I've now seen a couple of PCB daughter boards which can be plugged into the current DAC slots on the motherboard. Now here's the silly question. Would the SEG benefit from having the CD players on boards upgraded? OK laugh if you want but I'd like an opinion.

No, you either use the new plug-in DAC boards which would result in analogue out from the VRDS, or else forget them and feed S/PDIF into the SEG.

Thanks, I'm already doing the SPDIF, always worthwhile checking, thanks Martin.

I think the SEG is likely to outperform the add-on boards. Better to invest in a superb S/PDIF cable like the Black Cat I reviewed recently.

I've got Mark Grant's top jobbie on duty. I'm mainly into Vinyl so I don't think I'll be spending any more on a SPDIF unless I can borrow a few to compare against what I've got.
