One word of warning, about software. Rune is possibly a year away from its next meaningful iteration from what I can gather. I use Rune, and there are some parameters, such as oversampling, that you need to hack about with the code itself to implement, rather than being able to change them from the user interface. Unless the thought of buggering about with code makes you break out in a huge happy grin I'd recommend choosing between Moode and Volumio.
The cable from the router to the Pi should be Cat 6. terminated at both ends with RJ45 plugs. You can usually get pretty much whatever length you need on eBay.

Cool, thanks for the info Slinger you've been a big help mate It's a pleasure to be able to give a little bit back instead of just sitting here wondering what everybody else is talking about, Tim.

For your purposes, Tim, Volumio is pretty much bullet-proof. I'm biased because I use it, but then I too started off with a choice!

Mark Grant was my choice for the Belden cable. All black which didn't influence me one bit

Ok. Possible shopping list: Raspberry Pi 3 plus PSU Allo DigiOne or HiFiBerry Digi+ S/PDIF card plus correct case Belden 1694A S/PDIF cable Volumio/Moode/Rune build according to your preference Something to write to microSD card Something to control the Pi That will get you started with plenty of scope to upgrade later. Others please join in! What a bloody faff. Just get a squeezebox touch off ebay or another used site.

I had a Touch, David.
There is no comparison in sound quality.

Mine replaced a Squeezebox too. Not a Touch. Touch stands head and shoulders better than a Receiver.

Mine replaced a Squeezebox too. Not a Touch. Touch stands head and shoulders better than a Receiver. That's why I said Squeezebox and not Squeezebox Touch

I had a Touch, David. There is no comparison in sound quality. Not quite correct dude as a touch can be used with an external DAC, plus it takes a separate PSU quite easily, so sound quality wise its dependent on DAC and PSU. You can enthuse all you want or need to about this pi stuff and all the gubbins you have to add to it to get a decent sound and fair play to you all. I would much rather just buy a proper streamer and spend more time listening and less time faffing.

Part of the fun and enjoyment of this hobby is the ability to try all forms of delivering music, the fun police will always try to hijack threads/forums where people actually seem to be enjoying themselves, well that's a novelty isn't it! So before Tim's thread, in which some of us are actually trying to help him, gets totally hijacked...

Not quite correct dude as a touch can be used with an external DAC, plus it takes a separate PSU quite easily, so sound quality wise its dependent on DAC and PSU. That's exactly what I had, including all the software fixes to shut down unnecessary services and the analogue side, but you're wrong. The sending 'transport' has a big say in sound quality, not just the DAC.
