Hi Tim. Is the hard drive with the music files on actually a part of your PC, or is it an external drive?

Hi Slinger in an 1tb external drive In which case I'd say it's definitely a job for the Raspberry Pi. I'll leave it to someone better versed in the subject to 'sort you out' but the good news is you would be able to control your playback via your PC, and tablet, and phone. It's a good solution and a relatively inexpensive solution. If you've already got an outboard DAC then it just got even cheaper.

I do have an outboard DAC so anyone body else out there can be kind enough to point me in the right direction. Many thanks for your help Slinger

Raspberry Pi can take your USB drive and send the contents to an external DAC via, say, S/PDIF co-ax or optical. Almost any of the builds will do this, so choose your software according to taste. You can control it all from your listening position using a phone or tablet.

Hang on, just before you jump in the deep end. Tell us about your DAC and what inputs it has.
What networking do you have? Wi-Fi?

And how easy would it be to sling a cable from your router (assuming you have wi-fi) to your hi-fi?

I have the SEG Dac and the best way to connect would be via s/pdif or even better a usb cable I could run a long lead from my router to a pi board if that helps. Anything else you guy's need to know ?

I'll turn things over to Martin. It gets much too confusing when multiple people are trying to talk you through the same thing.

Ok, the SEG sounds much better with co-ax S/PDIF input. That means a DigiOne (premium) or Digi+ (budget) add-on board. Next: can you get cable ethernet to the Pi, or will it have to be wi-fi? This is so that you can control it from your phone/tablet.

Ok. Possible shopping list:
Raspberry Pi 3 plus PSU Allo DigiOne or HiFiBerry Digi+ S/PDIF card plus correct case Belden 1694A S/PDIF cable Volumio/Moode/Rune build according to your preference Something to write to microSD card Something to control the Pi
That will get you started with plenty of scope to upgrade later. Others please join in!

The Pi board is about £32 If you want to go for a Digi+, they are about the same sort of price, but members here who have gone for the DigiOne may have an old Digi+ they could sell you. Alternatively, the DigiOne is about £100 Software is free - Downloads with instructions here: VolumioMoode
RuneA case will cost you from £4 to about £30, depending on what S/PDIF card you choose and how fancy you want it to look A PSU could be a wall-wart that you already own to get you going, £8 for a kosher Pi one. Phone booster batteries are good and cheap, other batteries like Martin and John's motorbike approach are cheap too but maybe a step too far for part of a starter kit.
