Having loaded up Rune I have now found out that the next update might be as much as a year away. That's no good. I don't mind rewriting bits of code but obviously I'd much rather that features like upsampling (and SOX resampling?) were accessible from the UI. So, what should I switch to, and why?

Volumio. Because it's reliable and stable, is being constantly updated with more features. It has a killer application: Spotify Connect. The GUI is nice, it has album artwork, it's easy to setup even on wi-fi with temporary hotspot. It supports almost all Pi audio add-on cards. I like it, in case you hadn't noticed

As you were. It seems that the board I'm using won't work with Volumio on a Pi 3 Model B+ so it looks like I'll be continuing with Roon, at least for the foreseeable future.

piCorePlayer has proved to be very effective, and what's more you're already familiar with it.

It seems that the board I'm using won't work with Volumio on a Pi 3 Model B+ I thought it was a HiFiBerry clone? So did I, and so did the reports I read on it. I think it was designed around the previous incarnation of the Pi as it's only when it's paired with the 3 that they state that Volumio won't work. I'd already decided on Rune so I didn't bother to check for any other compatibility clashes.

I'm using S/PDIF into a DAC (Bushmaster 1) which doesn't have a USB port. piCorePlayer is not just USB based. It can interface just about everything via USB if you want to, but you don't have to. I had a look at the supported hardware (HAT) list earlier, while I was in device admin (looking for a work around for liffy99's wireless problems - see t'other thread for the cure) and it looks pretty comprehensive. All you need it the appropriate hardware, and you did get an SPDIF HAT if I remember correctly, so that should be just what's needed.

Ah, right, I obviously didn't go into it deeply enough. What I saw was 'USB' and a list of compatible DACS, not hats. I'll have another look. Thanks.
