I did meant to say that I need a readable display on the unit as i'm some distance for my tv and won't be using it for video
All the best

You can get the Denon models second-hand for very reasonable prices now, Tim. I had the 2910, and it surprised me how good it was.

Sorry I forgot to say that i'm looking for a unit with digital out ( preferably optical ) for the sacd play back In short, you can't get digital out (to go to a DAC) for SACD playback.
I did hear that there were devices to split out the digital signal from the HDMI lead but not sure if that's true.

This phrase could be read two ways.
"SACD playback and HD Audio format bitstream out"
SACD playback AND HD Audio format bitstream out.
Best check with Yamaha.

Pioneer are known to break the SACD rules somewhat. My Pioneer BDP-LX55 Blu-ray player outputs to the S/PDIF output even on SACD playback. You could probably pick up a used one for much less than your budget. Display is a little small, though.
EDIT: meant to say, this is for the SACD layer not the fallback CD layer.

Martin, how can you be sure that the digital feed is "pure" SACD and not from the CD layer ?

The manual talks about 24/44 and 24/88 PCM downsampling and also 1-bit output. I set it to 1-bit and the Caiman decoded it correctly, much to my surprise.
The answer is I cannot be certain, but a) other players usually output nothing from S/PDIF when the SACD layer is selected and I have 'SACD' showing on the TV info and b) Pioneer are known to break the SACD rules going back many generations of kit. Whether there is some donwsampling going on I cannot be sure, but the last time I tried it it sounded pretty good (but not as good as my Ayre).

I spent a while on the Interweb on this subject, but confusion reigns.
As DSD is native to SACD then your Pioneer might be converting to PCM ?
I take it the SEG can't handle DSD ?
Are there any DACs with an HDMI input ?
How does the Ayre handle SACD ?

How does the Ayre handle SACD ? 1. I guess it does in the normal output modes but it features '1-bit' as an output option. 2. The SEG plays back the above '1-bit' mode correctly. 3. I use a little Chinese box to extract S/PDIF from HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) for the purposes of feeding the Caiman-II in my TV system. 4. Natively, i.e. it plays SACDs via its own internal high quality DAC. There is no S/PDIF output when playing SACDs.

I don't, Tim. Whatever the Pioneer outputs, the SEG just plays it.
