Does anyone know anything about this cartridge?
My Dad has one that he’s found whilst sorting out his home office, that appears to have never been used and still in its original packaging.
Is it any good?

Put it this way - I doubt it's hugely inferior to the current 10XV which now sells for a ridiculous £499 or so (it used to cost not much different to a DL110 in an earlier but so similar version) The original 20A at around £79 was a good match for the mid 70's techie top-decks and we sold a lot in SL1700's I remember. The 10X was around £50? when new I seem to recall and we started selling more as time went on. The 20A in original form faded from the scene shortly after I remember. In a suitable fairly high mass tonearm, it should sound quite open and honest, if a little 'grainy' compared to the better sub £300 models today - just as the current one does in my experience Main competitor is the evergreen DLl10 (and possibly the low output AT-F7, which may well be better?)

Is that the one with the clear red plastic body?

Yes, I think it followed the version branded 'Ultimo'.

Could/would it work with my Rega RP3? Being high output, I assume it would work with a MM phonostage?

Yes I saw that the 10x5 retailed for around £500 now.

A friend had one. I thought it was reasonably competent. If it's free to you though, Paul, then it's a superb cartridge!

Great, I think I’ll give it a try and see how it compares to the Audio Technica I currently use.

As I remember the Ultimo, it was a bit lush in the midrange with nice fluidity but lacked both frequency extremes.
That was in the 1980s so a modern phono stage can probably get more out of it.

Of course it'll work in the Rega!!! Most things do in my experience apart from SPU's and ultra high compliance ADC's and top Empires One thing though and I speak from personal experience here! Please don't go the 'adjusting VTA' route, otherwise you'll find the arm may foul the lid and you'll need to spend a small fortune for the smaller diameter but similar mass tungsten counterweight instead of the larger diameter stainless steel? one the arm now comes with.

I've never played records with the lid down.

I always take the lid off when I play a record.

But if the counterweight is too big, you won't be able to put the lid on when you're not playing records. Unless you want to re-balance it every time. If you do that, you'll stop playing records in pretty short order!
