i bought this a few weeks ago as i have always lusted over it since seeing a picture on the vintage knob site. www.thevintageknob.org/pioneer-PLC-590.html. after a 10 hr round trip to leeds she's mine! the speed is stable even off of quartz lock. it came with an audio technica AT-110 tonearm fitted, being low mass its not suitable for my denon 103sa so ive swapped it for a denon HA-500 head amp. the start button was missing so i sent another one from the turntable to speedy steve to be copied. he's done a great job, just waiting for it to arrive. in the meantime ive had to make a new tonearm board for my zeta to mount on.

Hi Jamie, ive disvovered I have an original plc 590 platter mat here! Got it off the lady who I helped out last year along with an acos lustre gst1 and a set of audio technica ath7 cans. Thanks for the swap on the arm for the head amp, one of the benefits of forums is that folks can help each other out. The ha500 was for the 103, so should be ideal, the at1100 was for the audio technica high comp mms like wot I use, so should be ideal However, I now have 4 arms, what to do.... I think mayware and at440 back on the jbe and at1100 and at150sa on the lenco. Oh dear, I may have to build something new to put the acos on, and sell the rega 251....... :-) That pioneer will take any arm and cart and be sublime. They really dont build em like they used to. Look at a gale 2101 for confirmation. You'll not want another deck Thanks again Jamie Cheers ant

thanks for all the kind comments,im hoping this tt will do me for a long time! ant glad you got the tonearm ok. i have a very small itch at the moment to try a good quality jap arm, something like the pioneer pa-1000,as you can see the mounting distance for the zeta at 210.6 only just goes on the board.

They are great arms and I launched the, for JVC. The on the fly bias was really good, but I would prefer arms that are damped for MC carts. Jello 750 is a good match.

I had a 5045 on my acrylic plinth 401 and it was bloody good, I used it with a 103, 103r, ortofon sl15 and a shite benz micro. Thats the arm I thought of for jap arms, similar qualities to the old lad badged jelco arm but smoother

I reckon I'd put an AT-1010 on that! It brings up an interesting point actually. Well, interesting to me, at any rate. Jay has chosen to swap the arm in order to make a suitable match with his cartridge. Now, if it were something that had cost him a fortune, or that he had always aspired to owning, I could understand. However, ...and I don't mean to denigrate it one little bit here... I find it odd that the arm choice should be driven by the need to use a Denon 103sa. I think I would be leaning towards selecting a cartridge that suits my arm of choice, rather than the other way around.

you've got it wrong chris, just to be clear,i swapped the arm because it is no use to me,i already own 2 tonearms, zeta and alphason hr-100 both purchased long before the pioneer. i dont need 3 tonearms for 1 turntable, but i do need a decent head amp for my denon hence the swap. also my arm of choice is the zeta. lastly the denon did cost a fortune! lol

Thats the arm I thought of for jap arms, similar qualities to the old lad badged jelco arm but smoother JVC designed the 5045 to work with cartridges lik3 the X1 and 2 and Z1 etc, it also worked well with higher complains MCs like the MC1 and MC2e. I used the 103 with the 5045 on a QL10, good combo, but not the best in my opinion.
