Gosh, the amp prices are amazing.

Yup , I have a couple of the Breeze Audio TPA3116 amps and they're very good indeed . Well worth a try

they're good with wattage - the 50wpc seems plausible and one drives my MBLs as loud as I could wish, but I suspect they are shy of current and so might struggle with more difficult loads. Macca on AOS posted that one had run out of puff into his Focals.

Hi Jerry
Thanks for the info - it looks like these TPA3116 amps are made with varying different branding, some with more smoothing capacitors than others. This one is black with no brand name and with 6 smoothing capacitors, while others I’ve seen online are branded “Breeze Audio” and seem to have 10 smoothing capacitors - but may be same overall capacitance - can’t see the values!
Is it this black one that you’ve got and recommend?
Cheers. Bill

Check the rated output of the ones with more capacitors, Bill. I've seen some of the those with more caps that are rated at 100w+100w as opposed to 50w+50w

There’s a Youtube video of a 50W + 50W Breeze Audio (grey box amp) with 10 capacitors for smoothing on the power line - one of which blows probably as they are operating at max voltage rating. I think for max power the chap was testing the amp with a 24v dc supply. It might be that the amp that Jerry linked to uses 6 higher capacity capacitors (I assume in parallel on the dc input) to come up to the same overall capacitance as the 10 capacitor Breeze Audio amp, but from the pictures I can’t make out the capacitor ratings. The 6 capacitors might be 35v 330uF vs the 10 at 480uF.
In terms of power output, this seems to be closely related to the dc driving voltage - on the Youtube video 1/2 voltage gave 1/2 o/p power.
Cheers. Bill

I've no idea about the number of smoothing caps, I'm afraid. atb, Jerry

Be very wary of quoted output power, the 100W per channel is I think into 2 ohms.
You need full 24V supply to get max output, the 50+50W rating is into 4 ohm load. The max into 8 ohm is 38W or less. With 15V supply and 8 ohm load the max power is 18W.

Yeah, the stuff us UK forum members love to talk about. I think you call it " cheap shit"

How on earth did you know that? The leetle black tape patches show up on the photo but not in real life.

New power amp - PrimaLuna Prologue 5. The clever autobiasing arrangement means that it's plug&play for a wide variety of power valve types - KT88, 6550, EL34, 5881, KT90, KT77, KT66. Fun will be had with that capability. It came fitted with Edicron 6550WE, and JAN 12ax7 and 12au7 input valves. First impressions are -- very nice. An obviously 'different' presentation to the 2x Apart Champ 2 solid state powerhouses, which is a good thing. There's no point in having different amps if they all sound the same! So, the Cunning Plan is pretty much complete - excellent power amps in the 4 main flavours now reside chez moi, - valve (PrimaLuna), solid state class A/B (Apart, even if they do call it class G), solid state class A (LP Spirit / Pass Labs) and solid state class D (TPA3116). I hope they are all keepers for at least the medium term.
