Where's the Marantz amp Jerry ? Sold it a couple of weeks ago, Brian. I've another one in a 2nd system, but probably not for long! Onwards, ever onwards.

... and I haven't even plucked up the courage to admit to this one. A Lexicon MC-1 surround sound processor, from around 20 years ago. I've had one before, about 9 years ago and was impressed then. Not sure what made me buy another one, but once again I am very impressed. It has taken over DAC and preamp duties ... and I even use its surround sound modes, and have installed a pair of small rear speakers. It was $6k back in the day, so a serious piece of gear, and it sounds like it, too. Very, very nice indeed.

I've now got a quad of TAD EL34 valves from Hot Rox waiting to go into the PrimaLuna amp, but am still really enjoying it with the Edicron 6550WE. I guesss I need to try them just to make sure they are OK.

Wow - TAD Magic. 4x EL34 installed and sounding very vivid, clear and well resolved. Just waiting on the ordered ecc82 and ecc83 TAD valves now for that full TAD Sound.

Yep that's what TAD does.
A nightmare if you are expecting 1950's rose tinged golden tube euphoria!!

It's a great preamp. Really good. And a great DAC.
Progress in the last 20 years ...... not a lot, if any, imho. Oh, the specs have got a lot better, but not the sound.

My PrimaLuna power amp TAD output valve options have now been extended to 6l6 as well as el34. I've generally not been a fan of el34 valves, usually finding them rather lacklustre dynamically, but the TADs have challenged that. The PL amp gets on with them very well, presenting a rather upfront,'fast' and tightly focussed musical experience. The 6l6 are a bit more laidback and relaxed, mid-hall rather than the front row of the el34. Both options are a transparently enjoyable listen. I fitted the 6l6 quartet a couple of days ago and am feeling no urge as yet to return to the el34. Fully fitted out now with TAD 12au7 and 12ax7 input valves as well. TAD valves rule. - TAD [Tube Amp Doctor] are a German distributor that selects and re brands principally Chinese valves. Their selection criteria certainly align with my own sonic preferences - vivid, clear and well resolved ! I'm on the lookout for TAD 6550, kt90 and kt66 valves.
